About the Job
Applied Research Associates, Inc. is seeking a highly qualified Software Engineer who has a strong interest in creating novel decision support and situational awareness tools for the Intelligence and Defense communities. Our diverse team has a breadth of expertise ranging from physics to software engineering. We apply physical modeling techniques to simulate interactions and responses in complex systems. As we grow, we are looking for a new team member that is well-grounded in software engineering principles and enjoys designing elegant architectures to solve complex challenges. Experience & Skills Requirements:
Software Engineer Minimum Qualifications:
- The nature of work (i.e. interactions with the intelligence community and DoD programs) requires eligibility to apply for and hold a US security clearance; selected applicants will undergo a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements at the time of employment
- BS in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field or currently enrolled in a BS degree program with completion within a year along with 5-7 years of relevant work experience OR MS with 3-5 years of related work experience
- Strong high-level language (e.g. C++, Java, etc.) programming skills
- Experience developing on cross-platform software (mobile, web, desktop)
- Experience with agile software development
- A desire to work in a dynamic team environment
Software Engineer Additional Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience developing or using TAK (Tactical Assault Kit)
- Experience developing mobile (Android) applications
- Strong mathematical foundation and algorithm development skills
- Experience creating data structures that satisfy complex systems
- Expertise in Continuous Integration pipeline development and maintenance
- Expertise in DoD modeling and simulation technology
- Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written media with technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong foundation in software engineering
- Experience working on Intelligence and DoD programs
- Prior / existing security clearance
Software Engineer Description:
You will be a member of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and computer scientists developing simulation tool technologies to support real-world planning operations for the Department of Defense. You’ll become familiar with unique research areas such as modeling and characterization, weapons effects, weaponeering, and anti-terrorism tactics. As a research and development program, the nature of our work varies from month to month and year to year: You will be continuously challenged to learn and grow expertise in new areas.
Our technology stack evolves over the years, but the main skills we use today include modern C++, CMake, Java, Qt and Python. Our ecosystem of tools includes Git, Microsoft Visual Studio, Android Studio, Atlassian tools (i.e. JIRA, Bitbucket, and Confluence), GitLab, and TeamCity. At the end of the day, we try to find the best way to deliver useful products to our end users. The teams retain a mindset that is open to change and improvement.
The most successful candidates have a strong background in computer science, with experience in software architecture, algorithms, data structures, design patterns, API design, UX design, and/or test-driven development. Experience

Required- Bachelors or better in Computer Science or related field
- Masters or better in Computer Science or related field
