Our Opportunity:
Chewy is seeking an Occupational Safety Engineer (OSE) to support the Core, Rx, and Chewy Vet Care Network. The Occupational Safety Engineer will be responsible to partner with operations, engineering, legal, and Maintenance and Reliability teams to oversee and implement safety engineering evaluations and risk control programs across the organization. They will ensure compliance with regulatory standards, develop safety protocols, and provide training and guidance to Team Members. They will be required to lead risk assessments, assist in the development and review of equipment designs and provide guidance on requirements on controls and devices. The OSE will need to be knowledgeable in control systems, environmental and ergonomic design principles. Additionally, they will stay informed about emerging safety engineering guidelines and technologies to continuously improve the organization's occupational health and safety risk mitigation practices.
What you'll do:
- Establish an occupational safety engineering design review and audit process in accordance with ISO12100 and ANSI B11
- Review plans and specifications for new and retrofit equipment to make sure they meet safety requirements
- Identify and correct potential hazards by inspecting facilities, machinery, and safety equipment
- Evaluate the effectiveness of various industrial control mechanisms
- Ensure that a final engineering design complies with health and safety regulations, especially after an inspection that required changes
- Install safety devices on machinery or direct the installation of these devices
- Experience and knowledge of equipment certification requirements (CE, UL, etc.) and experience working with NRTLs
- Review employee safety programs and recommend improvements
- Act as a subject matter expert through the design and development process
- Collaborate with all levels of the engineering teams, quality assurance, manufacturing, and legal teams
- Establish measurements and audit parameters of the hazard control program effectiveness
- Develop a hazard log of design mitigations to confirm their application into design iterations
- Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial processes
- Assists other safety department staff members with duties as necessary or when requested by the EHS Sr. Manager.
- Determine training needs of personnel and assist them in obtaining that training.
What you'll need:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, structural, electrical or industrial engineering, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in safety engineering, preferably in a warehousing, corporate, and medical practice setting.
- Strong knowledge of industrial hygiene regulations, standards, and best practices, including familiarity with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Knowledge of International and Standards such as ISO, ANSI, OSHA, NFPA
- Comprehension, program creation, and practical application of: Combustible dust sampling, pharmaceutical dust sampling.
- Possess thorough understanding and knowledge of: 503b compounding pharmacy operations, lab equipment, air sampling, and cabinet certification.
- Possess understanding of NFPA 654, USP 800, 796, and 795.
- Ability to analyze drawings to mitigate future risk in complex operations.
- Possess a thorough understanding of world class manufacturing practices.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Experience in radiation safety programs.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines.
- Experience leading change in multiple practice environments.
- Must be willing to travel up to 75%
