Job Overview
The Sr. Director of Sales, Costco is responsible for leading and developing the Costco team, ensuring high levels of client engagement throughout the sales process. This role will play a pivotal part in defining successful relationships with clients that exceed their expectations. Collaborating with replenishment, analytical, and subject matter experts, the Sr. Director will deliver strategic recommendations aimed at increasing sales, distribution, market penetration, and profitability. The position also entails managing relationships with retailers and key manufacturers within the Costco channel.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership and Development: Lead and develop the Costco team, overseeing client engagement and project execution to consistently exceed expectations.
- Strategic Positioning: Establish MPG as the leading sales strategy and services team within the Costco landscape.
- End-to-End Client Management: Manage the entire client engagement process, taking the lead in defining project approaches, deliverables, and timelines while collaborating with analytical and replenishment teams. Balance high-level strategic thinking with tactical execution in a player/coach capacity.
- Relationship Building: Cultivate strong relationships with retailers and vendors, becoming a trusted source for insights and solutions. Utilize strong organizational and communication skills to advance relationships with senior executives.
- Business Development: Demonstrate curiosity in identifying new business opportunities, managing prospects, leads, and opportunities to secure clients for sales strategy and services.
- Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as a Subject Matter Expert for Costco, possessing a deep understanding of strategic priorities, marketing, pricing, product design, replenishment, and funding approaches necessary for success in the channel.
- Data Accuracy and Quality Assurance: Maintain a strong focus on the quality and accuracy of data provided to clients. Develop category leadership solutions that drive profitable sales growth using a diverse range of data sources.
- Financial Acumen: Exhibit strong financial acumen for strategic and profitable business building, with proactive management of P&L.
- Omnichannel Support: Provide knowledge and insights to support Costco.com business initiatives.
- Trend Analysis: Identify industry trends and prioritize how MPG can capitalize on them, including participation in trade shows and events.
- Critical Thinking: Employ critical thinking to guide the team in developing effective client solutions.
- Obstacle Management: Work collaboratively with the team to identify and proactively overcome barriers to success.
- Communication: Establish an ongoing communication mechanism to share project status, results, and insights with the broader MPG team (e.g., conference calls, meetings, email).
- Cross-Functional Contribution: Participate in projects beyond existing client engagements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (4-year) required.
- 10+ years of selling or buying experience, specifically in the Club Channel, with direct relationships with Costco Merchants.
- Proficient in data analysis and sales storytelling.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize, multitask, and keep projects on track.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Robust knowledge of the consumer products industry, including category, brand, and retail strategies.
- Ability to listen, understand, and resolve competing priorities effectively.
