Job Description
The surgical biller is responsible for the accurate completion of benefits verification, review and collection of patient financial responsibility. Timely follow up of all surgery related accounts receivables for all insurance payers, as well as any patient balances.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for the effective collection of all Billings and Accounts Receivable
- Accurately works all tasks, rejections and denials pertaining to surgery on a daily basis
- Reviews daily schedules for upcoming surgeries.
- Calls insurance carriers or utilizes appropriate online insurance system for benefits.
- Contacts and follows up with patients in regards to their financial responsibilities for scheduled surgery.
- Maintains open communication with the surgical teams related to any issues that may affect patient responsibility.
- Obtains and retrieves operation notes from the facility where the surgery was performed.
- Enters surgery charges into NextGen.
- Posts all surgery patient payments.
- Works all accounts receivable reports on a monthly basis to maintain established goals as set forth by the department.
- Develops, recommends and implements enhancements to Billing/Accounts Receivable policies and procedures in accordance with company standards and regulatory compliance processes to help maximize third party reimbursement.
- Maintains up to date billing knowledge of insurance carriers to be a resource for patients and our teams.
- Keeps current with all medical policies as they pertain to our practice.
- Regular and predictable on-site attendance required.
- Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
- Travels to other MAR locations as needed.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, communicate verbally in front of groups, 1:1 and over the telephone and in email. The employee will also be required to engage in interactive communication with employees, typically hearing and reading / responding to their emails.
This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, bend and reach open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Travel
Willingness to travel is required.
Required Education and Experience
- 3 -5 years of medical billing/accounts receivable experience preferred.
- Knowledge of benefit investigation including obtaining eligibility information, authorizations and referrals.
- Experience with CPT codes, ICD-10 and the Microsoft Office Suite. NextGen a plus.
- Strong customer service skills and attention to detail.
