Sworn Police Officer - Appalachian Regional Healthcare System

About the Role We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Sworn Police Officer to join our team at UNC Health Appalachian. The Sworn Police Officer will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of patients, visitors, and staff at Watauga Medical Center, Appalachian Regional Behavioral Health Hospital, Charles A. Cannon Jr. Memorial Hospital, and off-site clinics and offices. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in law enforcement, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to providing exceptional service in a healthcare setting. Responsibilities include:

Patrol assigned areas to deter crime, enforce laws, and maintain a visible presence to promote safety and security.

Respond to emergency calls, alarms, and incidents promptly, assessing situations and taking appropriate action to resolve conflicts or threats.

Conduct investigations, gather evidence, and interview witnesses related to criminal activity, accidents, or violations of hospital policies.

Enforce parking regulations, issue citations, and assist with traffic control as needed to ensure orderly flow of traffic and parking.

Provide assistance and support to patients, visitors, and staff during medical emergencies, psychiatric crises, or other incidents requiring intervention.

Monitor security systems, CCTV cameras, and access control systems to detect and prevent unauthorized access to facilities.

Collaborate with local law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, and hospital staff to coordinate response efforts during major incidents or disasters.

Assist with crowd control, special events, and public relations activities to promote a positive image of UNC Health Appalachian and enhance community relations.

Conduct safety and security assessments of facilities, identifying potential risks or vulnerabilities and recommending appropriate measures to mitigate hazards.

Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and testify in court proceedings as required.

Participate in ongoing training, drills, and exercises to enhance skills and preparedness for emergency response scenarios.

Adhere to departmental policies, procedures, and ethical standards, maintaining confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.

Compensation is commensurate with education and experience. Hiring compensation ranges from $21.00-$30.45 per hour and qualifies for shift differential for applicable shifts, as well as benefits eligible after a 60-day waiting period. Position Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field preferred.

Completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) and certification as a sworn law enforcement officer in the state of North Carolina.

Minimum of two years of experience as a sworn police officer, preferably in a healthcare or public safety setting.

Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; ability to obtain and maintain certification as a North Carolina Law Enforcement Officer.

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations, including patients, visitors, staff, and law enforcement partners.

Ability to remain calm under pressure, make sound judgments, and respond effectively to emergency situations.

Knowledge of criminal law, investigative techniques, and security protocols relevant to healthcare facilities.

Proficiency in using computer systems, security technology, and office software applications.

Flexibility to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

Commitment to ongoing training and professional development in law enforcement and healthcare security.
