STEAM SYSTEMS MECHANIC
The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.
Description
To perform maintenance, repairs, modification, replacement, and installation of boilers and associated equipment, components and supporting equipment located in the District Steam Systems (DSS) buildings, steam vaults and in other outlying facilities on campus.
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, modifications, replacements, and installations on electronic, direct digital, pneumatic, and PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) controls and devices for boilers, associated equipment components, and supporting equipment to include controls, meters, relays, sensors, analog I/O, isolated and non-isolated I/O, VFD.
- Performs preventive maintenance, repairs, modifications, replacements, rebuilds and installations on boiler electrical and mechanical components and supporting equipment such as pumps, fans, deaerators, piping, valves, heat exchanges, motors, hoists, motor control centers, power and lighting panels, emergency generators, lighting systems, air compressors and drying systems, and other similar equipment.
- Performs boiler, fan and pump rebuilds including the replacement of O-rings and gaskets.
- Sets clearances on labyrinth seals, journal bearings, seal openings, thrust and counter-thrust clearances per the manufacturerrsquo;s specifications using dial indicators, inside and outside micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring devices.
- Performs rebuilds of gear boxes, drive couplings, intermediate shafts, fan blade pitches, compressors, pumps, and seal replacements. Packs steam valves, rebuilds steam regulator and relief valves with proper settings for steam pressure. Sets fuel/air ratios for boiler firing.
- Interprets blueprints, sketches, or other descriptions of parts to determine their accuracy relative to the manufacturerrsquo;s specified clearances for boiler/pump/fan repairs, including disassembly/reassembly procedures.
- Utilizes and maintains records and performs all service and maintenance repairs in accordance with current state and insurance regulations for boilers and associated equipment. Follows proper safety rules and regulations for clearances, vault entry and any other applicable rules and regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
STARTING HOURLY RATE OF PAY:%2421.80 - %2428.35 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications).
Graduate from an accredited vocational or technical school in a two (2) year Mechanical
Systems/Maintenance program and four (4) years of related work experience at an equivalent facility
required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:
Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driverrsquo;s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated proficiency in preventive maintenance, repairs and modifications, replacement, and rebuilding of boilers.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of a variety of precision measuring devices for dimension conformity.
- Demonstrated proficiency in understanding and interpreting blueprints.
- Required knowledge of reverse dial indicator alignment procedures on all types of shaft alignments.
Personal:
- Will possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities of this position to include:
- Lifting and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds
- Perform task requiring climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, and extensive walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus
- Working in confined spaces
- Working within extreme temperature ranges
