Position Summary
Performs general and mid-level mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, and inspections on RFTA buses and automotive equipment. Not only with conventionally fueled vehicles but also with very specialized alternative fueled vehicles including Biofuels, Compressed Natural Gas, and Battery Electric vehicles. This includes conducting detailed inspections as well as removing, repairing, and replacing parts and components as necessary while using tools and equipment safely and professionally. Provides varied support to the Operation Department.
Essential Job Duties
- Operates vehicles while strictly complying with RFTA policies, directives, procedures, and all Federal and Colorado traffic laws and regulations.
- Performs routine maintenance and general repairs on transit equipment and support vehicles, primarily focusing on tire replacement, brakes, minor repairs, and adjustments, performs minor body work and repairs at the system, unit, component, or part level, and seasonal equipment switchover. Assists higher-level technicians with engine, transmission, and drive train repairs.
- Regularly inspects vehicles as scheduled (e.g. State of Good Repair, Safety, and DOT inspections), identifies defects, and makes repairs as needed. Performs regular preventative maintenance on RFTA vehicles. Including preventative maintenance of non-high voltage systems on Battery Electric and Hybrid vehicles.
- Regularly assists technicians in troubleshooting advanced vehicle systems, and identifying causes of maintenance problems. Recommends and performs subsequent repairs.
- Assists in the maintenance of vehicles utilizing alternative propulsion technologies and fuels including Battery Electric Buses (BEB), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Hybrid, and Biodiesel technologies.
- Ensures proper vehicle assignments are made while vehicle needs are being met.
- Participates in building safety inspections and selected training meetings.
- Responds to road calls, and service calls and operates service trucks. Provides support to the Operations Department for vehicle exchanges, vehicle repairs, or vehicle recovery as needed.
- Clearly document all actions taken in written and /or electronic format. Completes all necessary forms (e.g., accident, incident, spill reports, core and warranty information, etc.).
- Seasonally inspects vehicles as scheduled, identifying defects and making repairs as needed.
- Performs minor welding duties related to vehicle repairs.
- May assist in providing limited training and direction to other technicians.
- Actively and continuously improve professional knowledge, skills, and abilities by participating in routine training sessions and educational seminars relevant to the position and job duties.
- Meets attendance/participation standards for routine safety meetings and training sessions.
- Completes assigned safety and compliance promptly.
- Responsible for maintaining the work area in a neat and orderly manner.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proven experience as a service technician in a similar role, ideally within the public transportation or automotive industry.
- Strong understanding of diesel engines, electrical systems, and hybrid technologies.
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals and schematics.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to lift heavy objects and work in various weather conditions.
- Proficient computer skills with the ability to perform data entry.
- Adhere to a code of conduct that promotes teamwork and respectful interactions.
- Basic knowledge of electrical and gas welding.
- Basic skills with common mechanic hand tools, pneumatic tools, and diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English including reading, writing, and verbal skills.
Education
Required:
High school education or equivalent knowledge to perform the job successfully.
Preferred:
Vocational/Technical degree in a related field (diesel, automotive, etc.).
License & Certification Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License and be able to obtain a Colorado State Commercial Driver's License with a B-P2 rating within two (2) weeks of beginning employment.
- If an employee possesses an out-of-state driver's license they must provide a Colorado license within 90 days of hire.
- Valid/ current DOT Physical Exam Certificate
- Air Conditioning Section 609 Refrigerant Certification
- Underground Storage Tank (UST) Certification (Class C)
- RFTA Forklift Certification
- CNG Fuel Certification
- Must possess and maintain Transit ASE Certifications H8 (PMs & Inspections) & H4 (Brakes) within 6 months of accepting position.
- CDOT Annual Inspections Certification (Must possess and maintain within 2 years of employment.)
- CDOT Brake Inspector's Certification (Must possess and maintain within 2 years of employment.)
Experience
Four (4) years of technician experience or a combination of formal training and experience is required.
Working Conditions
- Position requires extremely strenuous physical work involving objects over 100 pounds occasionally and/or above 50 pounds frequently. Works in conditions where up to 650 volts DC and up to 480 volts 3-phase AC are present. Works in a typical automotive/industrial environment. Encounters exposure to moving equipment and vehicles, and related fumes and chemicals. Works in all weather conditions, at varied shifts, and on roadways in the event of a breakdown or accident. Responds to serious accidents. Comes in contact with bodily fluids regularly. Works regularly with hazardous and toxic materials (e.g., toxic paints, thinner, and other bodywork supplies) strictly adhering to all safety rules and regulations on their use, storage, and proper disposal. Personal Protective Equipment provided.
- Must be able to pass a fitness for duty test and drug and alcohol before employment.
- RFTA Vehicle Maintenance Department operates two locations 24 hrs./7 days a week 365 days a year. All employees are expected to work weekends, holidays, and any shift as necessary.
- Most shifts are 10 ½ hours with non-traditional starting times; generally, the morning shift (6:00 AM), afternoon (2:00 PM), or graveyard (10:00 PM). There are no conventional Mon-Fri 8-5 shifts.
