Job Summary and Qualifications
1 Uses technical expertise to execute all data management activities with the focus of maintaining the Trauma Registry database through data abstraction. Utilizes expertise in ICD-9 & ICD-10 Coding principles, Abbreviated Injury Scale, E-codes and interpretation of Emergency Medical Services pre-hospital reports. Must have a strong command of medical terminology and human anatomy and physiology in assuring accuracy and consistency of data. Will also abstract data on all patients requested by the Trauma Medical Director, Co-Director or Trauma Program Director, and Trauma Performance Improvement Manager.
2 As a team member of the Trauma Service department, the Trauma Registrar is responsible for medical record analysis, data abstraction, and overall data management specific to the trauma patient. Must perform functions consistent with the trauma registrar requirements for trauma accreditation as stated in the Virginia Trauma Center Designation Manual. Acts as a resource on trauma data and information.
3 Coordinates trauma registry information, assuring information is complete and in accordance with state regulations prior to submission.
4 Maintains and utilizes database software that will produce reports accurately reflecting trauma activity at Reston Hospital Center. May design and/or generate trauma related reports for medical and other professional staff in accordance with guidelines for requesting trauma registry data. Uses PI tools as appropriate such as run charts and diagrams to display data. Submits all required trauma data to the State Trauma Registry in a timely and accurate manner. Assists with the organization, coordination, and minute taking of various trauma related meetings and conferences.
5 Possess good working knowledge of computer software including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheet, and database in presentation of the data. Promotes a service of excellence in quality, teamwork, respectful communication, and maintenance of professional behavior.
6 Attends monthly / quarterly Interdisciplinary Trauma Committee meetings as needed reporting on registry and performance improvement data. Attends quarterly State Trauma meetings as needed. Participates in community education and outreach activities as requested. Provides injury prevention written material as requested for patients, families and the community. Provides education to nursing and medical staff as needed as determined by program director.
7 Obtained certifications or attend two courses within 12 months of being hired: (1) the American Trauma Society’s (ATS) Trauma Registrar Course or equivalent provided by a state trauma program; and (2) The Association of the Advancement of Automotive Medicine’s Injury Scaling Course as required by ACS Trauma Verification.
8 Maintains 8 hours per year or 24 hours in a 3 year period of continuing education that is specific to trauma service job duties and/or delivery of trauma care.
9 Other duties as assigned.
What qualifications you will need:
EXPERIENCE
Required- Thorough understanding of ICD-9 & ICD-10 coding; computer applications including word
processing, spreadsheet, and medical records database/system; accurate keyboarding skills; verbal & written
communication skills on a level to work actively and effectively with medical and professional staff; team building
and problem solving skills. Minimum of 2 years prior Health Information Management records system, Allied
Health Profession, HIM coding, or like experience required for non-credentialed staff
Preferred - Additional hospital and / or pre-hospital care experience preferred.
EDUCATION
Required- High School or equivalent, medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology are required.
Preferred - Related college degree preferred. Accredited Records Technician (ART) and /or Trauma
Registrar certification or candidate working toward such certifications preferred.
