Job Title: Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (Med-Surg RN)
Job Summary: The Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (Med-Surg RN) provides comprehensive nursing care to adult patients with a wide range of medical conditions. The role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care in collaboration with the healthcare team. The Med-Surg RN will be responsible for managing multiple patients with varying needs, ensuring high-quality care and patient safety.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Assessment:
- Conduct thorough assessments of patients’ physical, emotional, and psychological conditions.
- Monitor vital signs and other indicators to detect any changes in patient conditions.
- Document patient histories, symptoms, and responses to treatments.
Care Planning and Implementation:
- Develop individualized care plans based on patient assessments and medical diagnoses.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by physicians.
- Coordinate with healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive patient care.
Patient Education:
- Educate patients and their families about health conditions, treatment options, and post-hospital care.
- Provide instructions on medication administration, wound care, and lifestyle modifications.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
- Monitor patients for any adverse reactions or complications related to treatments and medications.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of care plans and make necessary adjustments in collaboration with the healthcare team.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with physicians, specialists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated care.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and team members to ensure understanding and satisfaction.
Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including assessments, interventions, and outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in documentation practices.
Patient Safety and Infection Control:
- Adhere to infection control protocols and hospital policies to ensure patient safety.
- Report any safety concerns or incidents to the appropriate personnel.
Emergency Response:
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide appropriate interventions.
- Participate in code blue and other emergency situations as required.
Qualifications:
- Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
- Licensure: Current RN license in the state of practice.
- Experience: Previous experience in a medical-surgical setting preferred, but not always required.
- Certifications: BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required; ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) may be required based on the facility.
- Skills: Strong clinical skills, critical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to work well under pressure. Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) is often required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, move, and transfer patients as needed.
- Capability to stand, walk, and perform other physical activities for extended periods.
Work Environment:
- Typically works in a hospital or acute care setting.
- May be required to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
