The City of Saint Charles Public Works Department is currently recruiting for the position of Water Distribution Worker. The purpose of this position is to perform skilled maintenance work involving a variety of specialized equipment for the construction, operation, repair, maintenance or replacement of water distribution system facilities and related appurtenances.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Safely and efficiently excavate, expose, repair / install / maintain water main piping, valves, service lines, taps, meters, hydrants and related apparatus.
- Properly inspect and maintain vehicles, equipment, tools, and supplies; Restock assigned vehicles on a daily basis to maintain a complete inventory of equipment, materials , and replacement parts.
- Operate in a safe and efficient manner a variety of construction vehicles and equipment including dump trucks, cranes, track loaders, backhoes, track hoes, pumps, generators, compressors, saws, and manual and power tools.
- Knowledgeable of appropriate safety standards, procedures and equipment.
- Learn new technologies, equipment, and processes to improve service delivery.
- Respond to public inquiries and complaints.
- Mandatory attendance and participation in: rotating on-call schedule, assigned overtime, water main break repair activities, civil emergencies, severe weather events including flooding and snow removal operations, special events, and call-outs.
- Mathematically proficient in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry, trigonometry, and calculation of percentages, fractions, decimals, volumes, ratios, etc.
Minimum Training, Licensure, Certification and Experience Required
- High School diploma or G.E.D.; Associate degree in related field with experience in Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel preferred.
- Two (2) years' experience related to water systems construction, maintenance or repair; or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge of water main materials and the skills, and abilities to troubleshoot water distribution system issues including leaks and pressure fluctuations.
- Valid Missouri driver's license required.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and tanker endorsements required as a condition of employment and continued employment.
- Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate required as a condition of employment and continued employment.
- Department of Natural Resources DS I Certification required or ability to obtain within six months as a condition of employment and continued employment.
Physical Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
- Ability to perform difficult manual labor for prolonged periods of time under severe weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, sleet, etc. while, either alone or in combination thereof, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, pushing, and pulling; and ability to frequently lift and carry equipment and materials weighing 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds, a minimum distance of 10 feet.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
