Job Description
Under the direction of the Water Plant Manager, and Licensed by the State of Maryland, serves as a Water Plant Operator and as such is responsible for performing a variety of duties related to the operation of the treatment plant during the assigned shift. Duties include but are not limited to routine preventative maintenance on equipment, general housekeeping, inventory of chemicals, collecting water samples from City residents and businesses, and treatment of some solid waste. Provides direction and supervision to trainees as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB TASKS: (Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions)
- Monitors the performance of equipment, gauges and charts, records statistical data
- Complete jar testing as needed
- Checks and records information and takes corrective action on routine or recurring problems
- Performs routine tests on influent and effluent samples; informs supervisor of any changes in chemical characteristics
- Treatment of solids in the solids handling facility
- Performs various maintenance tasks such as replacing seals and bearings; adjusting fittings; and cleaning tanks, screens, basins, equipment and the like
- Performs quality control tests, assuring utility system operates within standards
- Receives after hour calls when City Hall is closed. Dispatches the appropriate organization (Street crew, Wastewater Plant, or Repair Crew) from a provided call-in list in order to have situation resolved
- Provides supervision and training to other operators/trainees as directed
- Assures adherence to good housekeeping practices at the work site
- Accurately completes payroll timesheets
- Responsible for maintaining MDE/OSHA Standards
- Grease pumps and change oil
- Inspect water towers and maintain grounds.
- Perform maintenance on analyzers and the like at pumping stations
- Performs other duties as assigned
OTHER RELATED FACTORS:
- Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to noise, fumes, or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock and vibration
- The work involves working with toxic or caustic chemicals
- Work requires the use of respiratory and other proper protective equipment
- Incumbent works on a rotating on-call schedule
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of City policies, laws and regulations
- A working knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices
- Ability to lead and direct others, work in a team environment, and foster effective relationships within and outside the Department
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing, use a personal computer, telephone, and standard office equipment
- Ability to foster effective relationships within and outside the Department
- Must have considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials and methods used in maintenance, construction and repair activities
- Must possess a valid Maryland driver’s license
- Incumbent must be capable of lifting 50 pounds
- This position regularly involves walking, standing, stooping, bending, and climbing
- Ability to pass an annual physical examinations, including pulmonary function tests
Education and Experience:
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Two (2) years of technical training in biology, environmental science, chemistry or closely related fields
- Two years of experience in water utility
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable
- Possession of a Class 4A Water Treatment Plant Certificate and licensed as a Water Treatment Plant Operator
