Description
Under the close supervision of the Chief, Source Water Planning and Protection, through the Planning and Water Resources Division, provides support for water quality, hydrology, and watershed protection. Principal duties include providing hydrologic analysis of Fairfax Water's water supply facilities; technical expertise to support the work of regional agencies on water supply and water quality issues; review and analysis of water quality and water supply data and reports provided by the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory (OWML) and the Interstate Commission for the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB); and technical support for watershed protection activities.

Examples of Duties
Works in a team environment with other professional water planners on hydrologic and water quality issues by:
- Evaluating water, land use, stormwater and wastewater planning scenarios within the Potomac and Occoquan watersheds.
- Reviewing and analyzing water quality and water supply data and reports provided by the OWML and ICPRB.
- Providing support for analysis of reservoir management activities as they affect use of the reservoir for water supply.
- Tracking and coordinating as required to implement Fairfax Water's Occoquan Reservoir Shoreline Easement Policy.
- Supporting Fairfax Water's work with ICPRB and other professionals regarding water resources, reservoir/river operating rules and yield forecasts.
- Supporting Fairfax Water's work with NVRC, OWML, Fairfax County staff, and other professionals regarding water quality and watershed management.
- Tracking land use activities within Fairfax Water's watershed as they pertain to raw water quality.
- Preparing summary reports on Fairfax Water's water supply status and drought conditions.
- Working with regional Geographic Information System (GIS)-based tools to enhance water supply protection and spill reporting.
- Working with a rainfall-runoff model to predict water surface elevations at the Authority's Occoquan Reservoir dam during storms.
- Serving on regional technical workgroups supporting Fairfax Water's work on issues such as salt management, spill response, and urbanization challenges to water supply.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Typical Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering field with an emphasis in hydrology, limnology, and water quality modeling, water/wastewater treatment, or related field.
- F.E. (Fundamentals of Engineering) Certification or the ability to obtain within one year.
- Knowledge of the theory and practices of engineering relating to the design and operation of public water supply facilities.
- Good oral and written communication skills. Must be computer literate, including programming and use of standard software applications. GIS is a plus.
- Must demonstrate the ability to make accurate computations and notes.
- Must demonstrate the ability to collect and compile research data
- Possession of a valid driver's license and good driving record.
- Must pass a controlled substance (drug) test for employment.
