The Welding Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing welding procedures and techniques to ensure the consistent production of high-quality welds. They also inspect welds to ensure that they meet performance and appearance standards while developing welding processes that are efficient, cost-effective, and safe. Additionally, the Welding Engineer is responsible for testing and training personnel in welding techniques and safety procedures. The Welding Engineer must have an in-depth knowledge of welding principles, materials selection, and welding technologies. They must be able to create and implement innovative welding operations, fixtures and processes. The Welding Engineer must be able to troubleshoot and solve welding-related problems. They must also be able to provide technical guidance to other engineers, welders, and technicians through documentation and standards implementation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The essential duties and responsibilities of this job are included but not limited to this job description – other tasks may be assigned and expected to be performed.
- Develop welding techniques and procedures and apply welding engineering principles and experience to solve process and equipment problems involving material processes, specification restrictions, pre- and post-heating requirements, gas selection, unusual fabrication methods, and welding of critical joints.
- Prepare and qualify Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Utilize knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys to improve production welding processes.
- Provide technical guidance to help support production throughput, efficiency, cost reduction, scrap/rework reduction and safety improvements.
- Apply structured problem-solving approach to complex processes and equipment issues with the ability to determine root cause, as well as implement timely corrective action.
- Develop and maintain reactionary plans for process troubleshooting.
- Directs design of fixtures, assists production in maintaining inventory of fixtures, supplies and equipment.
- Establish personnel training and personnel testing guidelines and content; educate supervisors, operators and other support personnel in process flow, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting activities.
- Participate in project management for new equipment purchases by involvement in specifications, researching processes, quoting, design review process, review of welding documentation, and establishment of strong relationships with vendors. Aid in developing processes and systems for new equipment and welding applications.
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of welding equipment.
- Performs experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques, and materials.
- Support new equipment and process installation, startup, debug, optimization, and training
- Develop and maintain reactionary plans for process troubleshooting.
- Analyze engineering drawings and other technical documents to achieve welded products. Gives feedback and participates in the continuous improvement of these documents.
- Conduct product tests and inspections on welded components
- Comply with all Safety and Quality policies and procedures.
- Follows company policies and procedures to ensure compliance to internal and external requirements.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Extended coursework in welding, welding engineering or welding engineering technology, with 10 years of related shop welding experience.
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) preferred.
- Able to explain or teach welding concepts, correct improper techniques.
- GMAW, GTAW experience required.
- Experience with robotic welding and programming preferred.
- Experience with welding ferrous metals including stainless steels required.
- Experience with weld metallographic evaluation and failure analysis methods preferred.
- Strong understanding of AWS welding guidelines. Ability to read product weld requirements and apply to internal processes. Ability to understand interpretation of inspection guidelines and other quality requirements.
- Excellent "hands-on" welding and training skills.
- Demonstrates passion for improvement and a discipline of documentation (digital/paper).
- Ability to work well with others in a team environment.
- Proven leadership ability and excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational, analytical and communication (verbal and written) skills.
- Ability to prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced work environment
- Strong attention to detail.
- Possesses a broad understanding of production equipment and processes.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as product design drawings, operating and maintenance instructions, procedural manuals, and equipment drawings and schematics.
- Communicate frequently with all stakeholders regarding various issues.Proficiency in computer software such as Word, Excel, Power Point, QAD, IQS/Trubox, Solid Edge and file management.
- Occasional travel (1 to 4 times per year).
