Who We Are:
Youth Action Project Young Scholars is an AmeriCorps State and National (ASN) program of Youth Action Project The mission of Youth Action Project is to inspire youth through tailored academic mentorship, comprehensive skill development, and the cultivation of economic opportunity.
The purpose of Youth Action Project Young Scholars is to provide after-school mentoring and academic coaching to 340 economically disadvantaged and socially vulnerable high school students and opportunity youth locally through partnerships with the San Bernardino School District. School-based AmeriCorps members provide in-person tutoring, mentoring, and enrichment activities for a caseload of up to twenty students and participate in student outreach and retention activities. Students will achieve a minimum of two goals; improved academic goals and improved life skills that will help prepare them for their future.
What We’re Looking For:
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Must be 17 years or older (no upper age limit).
- Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident of the U.S.
- Must participate in a national service criminal history background check.
- Must be a high school graduate, GED recipient, or working towards attaining a high school diploma or GED during the term of service and prior to utilizing the educational awards.
- Must be able to commit to service for the full program term.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- Minimum 48 college semesters or 60 college quarter units strongly preferred.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects at a time.
- Individuals passionate about helping youth identify and achieve their goals.
- Ability to positively engage with and relate to youth of varying backgrounds and experience.
- The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school personnel, students, and peers.
- Interest in education-related career.
- Must have reliable transportation to travel to school site(s), YAP office, and meeting sites required.
- Must be available and willing to serve occasional evenings and weekends.
- Must be able to facilitate program activities while ensuring student safety; activity may include prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, and outdoor exposure.
- Spanish is desired but not required.
What You’ll Do:
Volunteer Coordinator:
Member role and responsibilities in the AmeriCorps focus area of Education include facilitating learning, enrichment, and goal setting for K-12 youth through Youth Action Project’s school-based programs. The Volunteer Coordinator (VC) is responsible for recruiting and managing community members, with a focus on beneficiaries, to participate in various service projects. The VC is also responsible for coordinating service events for AmeriCorps National Days of Service.
A typical service day for a Volunteer Coordinator (VC) member would start at the member’s primary school service site at 7:00 am engaging with youth in activities such as homework help, athletic study hall, college and career readiness activities, sports, arts, music, and games. At 8:30 am, VC members will maintain digital and physical student files, and participate in all program promotion and volunteer recruitment. Members will attend community events to nurture new and existing relationships with collaborative partners. Members will maintain a calendar of outreach activities and track volunteer recruitment of one-time and ongoing volunteers. Members will support with creating, editing, and posting digital content that aligns with community service projects. The 6.5-hour service day would end at 2:00 pm.
Members will have an orientation/onboarding process to include training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities per 45 CFR §2520.65. Members will participate in required training (Training hours not exceeding 20% of total hours), National Days of Service, and other compliance elements outlined by AmeriCorps.

- Living Allowance of up to $24000.00 for Three Quarter Time Slot (1200 hours). Bi-weekly living allowance of $1090.91 (Living allowance will be distributed in regular increments throughout the program year; members who start later in the program year or end early will not receive the full amount.).

- Member Development to include training, networking, and professional development opportunities that can be utilized and will be valued by future employers after the service term is completed. Skills to be developed include effective communication with youth and school personnel, professionalism, tutoring best practices, developing healthy boundaries, data tracking and data collection, and facilitating lesson plans and/or activities.
- Training certifications include Sexual Harassment Prevention, Child Abuse Mandated Reporter, and CPR, AED, and First Aid.
- Hands-on experience in a high school setting, collaborating with teachers, counselors, and other school personnel.

Where You’ll Serve:
Primary member service site at one of the following San Bernardino City Unified School District high school sites; Indian Springs High School, Sierra High School, San Bernardino High School, or YAP office will be located in the city of San Bernardino. This is the primary location where member will complete their service.
Youth Action Project Young Scholar’s primary headquarters location is at Youth Action Project at 696 S. Tippecanoe Ave, San Bernardino, CA 92408.
The Details:
Term of Service:
The term of service is Three-Quarter-Time. To successfully complete your term of service and qualify for an Education award, you must serve a minimum of 1200 allowable hours. The program’s planned term of service is August 19, 2024, to June 30, 2025.
Each AmeriCorps member’s official start date is when they are fully enrolled in the MyAmeriCorps portal (which includes completion of the background checks and citizenship/residency eligibility checks). No hours can be earned, and service cannot start, until that time.
Time Requirements of Position:
- Members are expected to serve a minimum of 32 hours per week throughout the program year.
- The schedule for service hours will most commonly be Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 2:00 pm.
- Members will be required to participate in events during the program year including national days of service such as 9/11 National Day of Service, Martin Luther King Day of Service, Cesar Chavez Day of Service, Earth Day, and AmeriCorps week.

AmeriCorps member t-shirts will be provided and required.
