Who are we?
The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) is committed to preventing pollution and protecting the environment, including the region's most precious resource - Lake Superior. WLSSD treats all municipal and industrial sewage in the Duluth-Cloquet area. Founded as a special purpose unit of government created by the Minnesota Legislature in 1971 to address serious environmental pollution problems in the lower St. Louis River Basin, WLSSD provides wastewater and solid waste services and oversight for a 530 square mile region around Duluth, Minnesota.
What's your day like?
As an Accountant 2 at WLSSD, your day-to-day responsibilities will include managing and analyzing financial data to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulations. You will prepare financial statements, budgets, and reports, while also assisting with audits and maintaining thorough records. Collaborating with other departments, you will provide valuable insights to guide financial decision-making. You'll be expected to reconcile accounts, review transactions for discrepancies, and implement internal controls to mitigate risks. Engaging consistently with internal stakeholders, you'll provide clear financial insights, contributing to a culture of excellence and customer focus.
What you need to be successful
To succeed as an Accountant 2, you'll need a solid foundation in accounting principles, which is demonstrated through a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, and three years of full-time professional accounting experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered. Experience with payroll, particularly in working with union contracts, is preferred, as it will enhance your ability to navigate complex financial scenarios.
Proficiency in accounting software and tools is essential for efficiently managing financial data and reports. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to problem-solve are critical for maintaining accuracy and integrity in your work. Lastly, a valid driver's license is required for potential travel related to your role.
