Step By Step is a nonprofit organization based in Puyallup, WA. Since 1997, we have supported thousands of families in our community, helping babies get a healthy start and empowering mothers with the skills they need to thrive. We offer Maternity Support Services and Infant Case Management through home visits by registered nurses, licensed counselors, and dietitians. We also provide mental health support groups, crisis and homelessness prevention services, job training, educational scholarships, and peer mentorship.
Step By Step is supported by our social enterprises, Farm 12 and Fika, which include a restaurant, event space, and coffee shop. These community gathering places provide financial support for Step By Step and employment opportunities for moms and their families.
Job Summary
As the Accounting Manager, you will oversee the accounting functions performed by the bookkeeper, including receivables, payables, payroll, credit card transactions, bank reconciliations, and month-end processes. You will manage the accounting system, prepare monthly journal entries, reconcile transactions, and generate reports. Your role also includes compliance reporting, contract oversight, and developing financial policies and procedures. You will provide accounting support for both Farm 12 and Fika as needed.
The Accounting Manager will be part of the Finance and Administration team, ensuring accurate recordkeeping, budget management, and compliance with accounting standards. This position will work closely with our operations staff, outside accountant, and Board members, while supervising the Step By Step bookkeeper and supporting the accounting teams at Farm 12 and Fika.
Responsibilities:
- Financial Reporting: Maintain an organized accounting system to provide accurate and timely financial reports.
- General Ledger Maintenance: Oversee the general ledger, reviewing, reconciling, and balancing accounts, and preparing monthly financial reports.
- Cash Receipts and Donations: Reconcile donations with the donor database, oversee deposits, and resolve discrepancies. Assist with compliance reporting.
- Accounts Payable Oversight: Verify purchases, manage data entry, and track credit card payments and discrepancies.
- Contract Compliance: Oversee payments to contract staff and ensure compliance.
- Payroll Management: Maintain personnel and payroll records, process payroll and employee benefits, and ensure accurate filings.
- Construction Accounting: Oversee accounting for construction projects, including capital asset updates and depreciation schedules.
- New Early Learning Center: Provide accounting structure for this new development.
- Support for Farm 12 and Fika: Assist with accounting processes and reconciliations between accounting systems.
- Budget Preparation: Assist in preparing annual budgets and maintaining organizational financial goals.
- External Accountant Support: Assist with financial analysis and audit preparation.
- Other Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years in accounting, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
- Skills: Proficiency in QuickBooks (or similar software) and Microsoft Office Suite. Strong attention to detail, time management, and ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Interpersonal Skills: Excellent oral and written communication, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot, research issues, and maintain organized records.
- Confidentiality: Must respect privacy laws, including HIPAA, and maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
- Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check.
Work Environment

Compensation:
- Hourly Rate: $43-50/hour, depending on qualifications.
- Work Schedule: Part-time position estimated 15-20 hours per week based on workload.
