ACTIVITIES ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION:
Hours are 4 weekdays from 10 AM to 6 PM, with one weekend day per week. You have flexibility in setting which days to work!
This position assists with planning and carrying out all activities for residents in our assisted living and memory care areas. Works cooperatively with residents, volunteers, researchers, and family members. Also provides personal care services to residents and provides for residents’ physical safety and emotional well-being.
ACTIVITIES ASSISTANT DUTIES:
- Working under the guidance of the Director, sets up and implements all psycho-social activities, exercise classes, outdoor walks and programs; birthday and special parties, movies, music, arts and crafts, pet visits, social recreation and other games or activities.
- Incorporates activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and grooming; and, instrumental activities of daily living such as bed making, dishwashing, folding towels, cleaning tables, sweeping, raking, etc. into the residents’ daily routine for therapeutic effect.
- Works with the Director and other team members to ensure that planned activities are well balanced, coordinated, and integrated with the special needs of each resident.
- Assists with preparation of the monthly newsletter.
- Assists with planning monthly calendar of activities and events.
- Inventories supplies on a weekly basis and turns in requests for additional supplies to the Activity Program Director monthly.
- Changes calendar, posts activities for the day, checks special event request forms, sets up and assists with the planned activities, including setting up the refreshments to be served, passes refreshments, and assists residents in general. Informs residents and care givers of the events scheduled for the day and assists residents to planned activities.
- Assists with decorating facility including hanging, changing, boxing and storing decorations.
- Decorates for monthly birthday parties, and all other special events. Delivers birthday cards and balloons, makes arrangements for birthday cake and other related duties.
- Purchases prizes for games, cleans up after activities, conducts Sittercize classes, conducts tea parties and coffee talk, organizes Sing-A-Long sessions, rents movies, and any other associated activities.
- Familiarizes self with residents’ charts. Maintains confidentiality of resident records, services and communication related to residents.
- Provides residents assistance with personal care needs in grooming such as hair, nails, teeth, etc. as needed.
- Orients new residents to surroundings, including frequently demonstrating the use of call lights, light switches, bathroom fixtures, and room temperature control.
- Observes resident and reports changes in behavior or health status to shift nurse.
- Practices safety at all times; applies all accident, fire safety or emergency procedures of the facility in compliance with Epworth Villa Safety Policies and Procedures.
- Protects the personal dignity and physical safety of each resident.
- Works cooperatively with other staff members using a team approach to care.
- Relates courteously to residents and their families.
- Attends all staff in-service training and participates in job–related continuing education as required for this position.
ACTIVITIES ASSISTANT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Write routine reports and correspondence.
- Effectively communicate with co-workers, residents and their families in the English language.
- Must possess compassion, understanding, patience, and tact in dealing with residents, families, and work effectively with staff.
- Must demonstrate an attitude of service to residents, family members, staff, and people from the community.
ACTIVITIES ASSISTANT EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of high school diploma, some college preferred.
- Six months to one year in a geriatric care setting or extreme desire to learn.
