About the Job
Opportunity
- Diagnoses and treats critically ill patients requiring emergency and elective surgical care;
- Responsible for the delivery of cost-effective surgical care, both inpatient and outpatient; develops and implements treatment plans including non-operative management and postoperative care;
- Works collaboratively with the Director and members of the Surgical Department on departmental, hospital-based and system wide quality improvement and safety goals and evidence-based practices/objectives;
- Works collaboratively with residency program directors and physician extender/medical student clerkship directors to create an optimal education environment for the trainees and the various training programs;
- Provides mentorship to residents, PAs, NP, RNFAs for clinical, academic, educational and leadership development;
- Responsible for participation in and completion of Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations and/or performance of Focused Professional Practice Evaluations, as necessary;
- Reports to the Director of the Surgical Department and Surgical Critical Care and the Chief Medical Officer(s) of the Capital Health System;
- Manages patients overall care, from initial evaluation to postoperative recovery outpatient follow-up;
- Provides expeditious, expert life-saving interventions in emergency departments, floors, ICUs, as necessary;
- Performs emergency surgeries - open, laparoscopic and robotic;
- Provides care in the ICU setting, including ventilators, hemodynamic support and surgical nutrition, all in a closed unit model with a multidisciplinary approach;
- Collaborates with other specialists, such as interventional radiologists, gastroenterologists, MFM and OG/GYN, emergency medicine physicians, anesthesiologists and intensivists;
- Educates patients, family members and other healthcare providers on surgical conditions, treatment plans, stays up-to-date on the latest guidelines and evidence-based practices.
Work Environment:
- Primarily hospital-based (community hospital)
- Intensive care units;
- Emergency departments;
- Outpatient clinic.
Requirements:
- Medical degree (MD or DO) and the documented completion of a surgical residency program.
- Board certification in surgery or a related specialty.
- Board certification in Surgical Critical Care.
- Maintenance of certification in the American Board of Surgery program preferred.
- ATLS certification preferred (Advanced Trauma Life Support).
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) mandatory.
- Strong clinical and surgical skills in a high pressure, high stakes environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; excels in a teamwork setting.
- Days, nights, weekends and holiday call schedules.
