Department Summary
The Foundations Program serves as the gateway and first-year experience to all incoming students. It is the core of all undergraduate degree programs in the College of Visual Art and Design at The University of North Texas (UNT). Coursework in the Foundations Program introduces visual problem solving and critical thinking strategies incorporating/studying culture and history, and the practice of various art/design forms across disciplines to prepare students for rigorous college courses in visual art, design, art education, and art history.
Position Overview
The Foundations Program in the College of Visual Arts and Design seeks an adjunct assistant colleague with expertise in a Design, Visual Art, or related discipline/s, and who understands divergent approaches in teaching in the Foundations curriculum. The Foundations Program, at the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas, has a diverse student body and lecture/lab format of course delivery (i.e., classroom learning in a once week lecture as one cohort and with hands-on work in separate studios).
The adjunct assistant faculty will work closely with the foundations lead faculty’s supervision in the curricular matter, and the Foundations Director to facilitate the success of student learning to achieve a cohesive curriculum goal for all students.
The adjunct assistant faculty in the Foundations Program must be able to:
1. teach students to understand creative processes, the transferability of skill, and conceptual thinking in art and design disciplines
2. teach diverse media at the Foundations level (teach students an understanding of and apply the elements and principles of art and design in various media, e.g., drawing, 2D and 3D design, time-based, lens-based, and digital, etc.) within a thematic and conceptual framework.
The anticipated need is for adjunct instructors whose duties may include, but are not limited to, teaching the following courses. This position may require occasionally stepping in as a substitute at an hourly rate.
ART1600 Foundations: Perception and Translation
ART1700 Foundations: Space (physical, temporal, and virtual)
ART1800 Foundations: Narrative and Representation
ART1900 Foundations: Systems and Transformations
Minimum Qualifications
MFA in Visual Art, Design, or related discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
A demonstrated ability to teach and make connections across various (2D/3D/time-based, etc.) disciplines in visual art and design.
A demonstrated ability to mentor students.
