The After School Counselor I is responsible for providing physical, mental and spiritual growth and development opportunities for each child in the program. Along with planning and implementing daily plans in accordance with age appropriate programming through academic enriched activities. This position will adhere to the South Carolina DSS and the Council on Accreditation (COA) National Accreditation procedures, policies and recommendations.

Hours for this position are typically, Monday through Friday, from approximately 2:00pm to 6:00pm (Times can vary).
Responsibilities:- Supervise and ensure the safety of children at all times.
- Build and maintain order and enthusiasm in a group.
- Supervise and manage groups of school age children during homework; lead them in physical activity games, arts and crafts, nutrition lessons, etc.
- Develop and implement lesson plans for program times utilizing risk management guidelines, developmental characteristics, variety, creativity and academic enriched activities.
- Maintain equipment and facilities, and use only in an appropriate manner.
- Report all program changes to Site Coordinator, Youth Program Director, or Executive Director.
- Be prepared for program responsibilities as assigned including lesson plans, devotions, group activities, Family Events and water activities.
- Assist in School’s Out Days, Holiday Camp, Parents Night Out and Special Events as required.
- Attend and complete 15 hours of approved South Carolina DSS Training annually.
- Attend quarterly YMCA of Greenville Training events.
- Build and maintain positive relationships at all times with children, parents and co-workers.
- Create an environment that promotes belonging, achievement and relationships.
- Adhere to all program rules as outlined in the Staff Manual, Personnel Policy and Code of Conduct and Risk Management Manual and any other program specific guidelines.
- Assist in maintaining program standards at all times in regards to Quality Check Standards and Licensing Regulations.
- Able to drive a 14 passenger bus, if over 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license.
- Encouraged to participate in the YMCA’s annual support scholarship campaign.
- Maintains positive relations at all times with members, participants and co-workers.
- Attend all required staff trainings and meetings, to include New Staff Orientation, and CPR, First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogens, and Child Abuse prevention within the first 30 days of hire date.
- Assist in maintaining accurate records at all times to include:
- Attendance Rosters Daily (Arrivals and Dismissal)
- Medication Logs
- First Aid Logs
- Discipline Reports
- Incident Reports
- Field Trip Rosters
- Closing Checklist
- Assists in all areas of the branch and association operations as requested by management.
- Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers
- Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
- Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers
- Follow mandated reporting requirements
- Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- At least 18 years old.
- Minimum of 2 seasons of experience or years working with youth.
- Requires the ability to be a good role model and to adapt to changing needs and circumstances.
Preferred:
- Minimum of 6 credits/units in Child Development/Elementary Education or 60 hours of approved Childcare related training (Requires Documentation).
- At least 20 years of age, with a Valid Driver’s License.
- At least one year of experience working in a childcare setting.
- Be willing and able to drive a 14-passenger bus.
