The Opportunity
As an After School Program Lead at Portland Tennis and Education (“PT&E”), you will have the opportunity to lead a group of students (referred to as “Scholar Athletes”) in grades 4 and 5 (the Elephants classroom) in support of accomplishing academic goals, meeting character development milestones, and engaging in fun, thoughtfully planned tennis, wellness, life-skill, and community-based activities.
The After School Program Lead serves as an inspiring role model to Scholar Athletes, demonstrating a growth-oriented mindset, planning and leading meaningful educational and enrichment activities, monitoring and enabling student progress, and enthusiastically encouraging and enabling program participation and positive growth.
During the school year, this part-time position is at our After School Program. Approximate hours are 12:30p - 6:15p Monday through Thursday plus planning time which can be done based on a flexible schedule for a total of ~23 hours / week.
For this role, we ask for a commitment through the end of the 2024-2025 school year, which finishes in June. This role has the potential to continue into the summer with an increase in scheduled hours. The ideal candidate will be available to continue in the summer with the adjusted hours.

Your Role: Services to Students
Plan and facilitate the following 4th and 5th grade classroom-based activities in keeping with PT&E’s program plan and schedule:
Daily homework completion
Daily academic activity, to be facilitated in whole groups or in small groups differentiated by level or need
Daily life skills and/or character development activities aligned to PT&E values, such as facilitating a discussion circle and/or team-building activities
Ensure student safety and program participation, e.g.:
Monitor individual and groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, park, library, community events), providing a safe, respectful, and positive multicultural learning environment by enforcing program rules and participation expectations
Develop and foster relationships with the students in the Elephants class, creating a feeling of belonging and a welcoming classroom environment.
Facilitate program-wide and class-specific behavior management systems, including rewards and consequences
Deploy and oversee support coaches and volunteers in alignment with submitted program plans
Support class on the tennis court during students’ allotted tennis time
Identify and support students in need of academic, behavioral, and/or mental health-related interventions, e.g.:
Refer students to Instructional Specialist and/or Youth and Family Advocate if available
If necessary, partner with the above-mentioned specialists to determine an appropriate path forward
Implement agreed-upon student interventions in the whole-group classroom setting
Ensure classroom is clean, organized, and adequately prepared for student participation upon program start and end time
Utilize provided templates to plan lessons, submit requests for necessary supplies, and ensure time tracking is complete by a deadline on a weekly basis
Your Role: Services to Families
Partner with PT&E leadership and students' family members to ensure student success
Communicate with parents at student pick-up to build positive rapport and trust
Reinforce program procedures to families, e.g., attendance phone number, behavior systems, reminders about monthly family meetings

Serve as a positive ambassador for PT&E’s mission and vision within the internal team and with external stakeholders
Participate in meetings and complete all required tracking processes necessary to uphold the program’s commitment to meaningful data collection and evaluation methods
Other duties as assigned, e.g., contributing to team projects to maintain a conducive learning and athletic environment
Maintain up-to-date certifications and other employee requirements as outlined in the employee handbook
The ideal candidate must have:
At least one year of lesson planning experience for grade school age students
At least one year of experience working with grade school age students
Ability to connect with students on an individual level while also creating a welcoming classroom environment
Classroom management skills
Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds
Spanish language skills
Proficiency in Google Suite
Availability for an afternoon schedule
