Accountabilities
Scrubs in on surgical procedures, under professionalnurse supervision, for many different advanced and complex types of surgerieswhich includes: General & Rectal Surgery, Laparoscope and OpenCholecystectomies, appendectomies, hernias, thyroidectomy,Obstetric/Gynecology; caesarean sections, hysterectomies, therapeuticabortions, dilation & curettage, bilateral tubal ligations laparoscopies;Otolaryngology; tympanoplasty, tonsillectomy, rhinoplasty; Orthopedic; scopes,open reduction, internal fixation on ankles, femurs, tibia/fibula, insertion ofrods, screws, plates, wires, total hip, total knee and total shoulder procedures;Endoscopic procedures; and other procedures as required. Clinical duties include the provision ofpatient care and support of individuals of all ages and their families. The incumbent shall perform duties asassigned and ensure quality patient care despite the situation encountered, beit routine or emergent.
Utilizesthe AORN Standards of Care in everyday practice. Supplies one or two surgeons with properinstruments, sutures, sponges and equipments. Ascertains with professional nurse the accuracy of the sponges, needles,and instrument counts. Scrubs, gowns andgloves for surgical procedures as well as to gown and glove the surgeons andtheir assistants. Corrects breaks inaseptic techniques by any person to provide optimum patient care. Anticipates the surgeons preference for certainmaterials or instruments and be able to respond to these preferences inadvance. Updates Nurse as necessarybased on continuing assessment of equipment needs and physician preferences;demonstrates sound clinical judgment; adaptable to changing patient needs.
Setsup sterile table with instruments, equipments, supplies, medications/solutionsneeded for surgical procedures. Checksto see that the equipment is in good working order. Maintains highest standards of steriletechnique during procedures. Helps indraping the sterile field (back table, mayo stand, OR table, etc.). Correctly labels and processes all operativefluids. Assists in preparing room forthe next patient. Operates and monitorsspecialized OR equipment. Demonstratesuse of autoclaves. Takes initiative in reporting equipment in need of repairsand low levels of supplies. Takes apart and reassemble any instrument or pieceof equipment that needs cleaning and prepares instruments forsterilization. Monitors supplies andinstruments to assure sterility of materials used furthering Quality Assuranceof patient care. Inventories, monitorsassigned services supplies and orders as needed.
Staff teaching and development 1) Approachesteaching based on assessment of learners needs and the principles of adultlearning; 2) assists other staff in initiating a plan to meet identified learningneeds, 3) develops/implements educational programs and learning aids for thearea/department (i.e. in-service classes, special projects, learning aids,patient care standards); 4) utilizes opportunities for incidental teaching withstaff members; 5) assists in the orientation of new staff and students bysharing knowledge, experiences and verbal encouragement; 6) guides others inchoosing nursing intervention, developing skills and applying knowledge. Participates in planning and conductingcontinuing education.
Managing care through others 1) Follows anddirects others to follow Corporate, hospital, departmental policies andprocedures and patient care standards. Provides input regarding the need for changein policies, procedures and patient care standards; 2) communicates with staff,patients, significant others and other health team members in a way that issupportive, constructive and positive; 3) gives feedback to other staff andhealth team members in regard to behavior that does not support achievement ofpatient, area or organizational objectives; 4) identifies and assists inaltering unproductive group behavior based on principles of groupdynamics. Maintains confidentialityregarding administrative and patient issues.
Participateson hospital committees as assigned. Area, department, hospital contributions 1) Attends and participates in area staffmeetings, submits agenda items to Nurse Manager and/or initiates discussionregarding area or department issues; 2) applies information presented in staffmeetings; 3)participates in area goal setting; 4) practices cost effective useof staff and supplies and suggests alternatives for increasing cost effectiveness;5) documents participation in at least one of the following areas: a) area committees,b) nursing or hospital committees.

License/Certification
Completionof a technologist training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditationof Allied Health Education Programs, or any accrediting agency recognized bythe United States Department of Education and Surgical TechnologistCertification (CST) preferred; if not certified, certification must be obtainedwithin six months of hire or in certain instances, on the job trainingspecific experience greater than 5 years may substitute for certification.

***Pertains to Travel OB RN's:The nurse is on-call for 7 days in a row, 12 hours each day. The RN will receive a guaranteed 40 hours for the week. The nurse will not receive on-call or call back pay since they are already "on-call". The on-call nurse will have 30 minutes to respond to any page and cannot leave the island. On-call will rotate through staff every week, so each nurse will be on-call every 3 weeks.***
