LOCATION: THE POINTE #1 BALLWIN COMMONS CIRCLE
JOB SUMMARY:
This position will assist the Aquatic Manager in managing the Ballwin Aquatic facilities including planning, scheduling, organizing and supervising swim lessons, aquatic/fitness programs, activities and special events, which meet the leisure needs of the community. Also share in the facility supervision of both City of Ballwin facilities, including openings, closings, MOD shifts as well as assisting with some programs and special events.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The Aquatic Specialist will assist the Aquatic Manager in:
- Development, planning and supervision of recreation programs and special events at The Pointe, North Pointe Aquatic Center or other aquatic facilities.
- Development, implementation and supervision of department special events.
- Recruitment, hiring, and training, scheduling and evaluation of all aquatic personnel at both facilities.
- Maintaining payroll records for all aquatic employees.
- Assist in the management of all facets of pool operations, including aquatic instructional programs, pool special events, and pool mechanical systems. Also facilitate supervision for other managers in areas of the front desk and concessions.
- Maintaining all certifications of aquatic staff.
- Scheduling and conducting certification courses and certification reviews.
- Handling grievances and/or discipline cases involving pool patrons. Reports serious cases through the appropriate chain of command.
- Planning, scheduling, organizing, implementing, and supervising other aquatic programs and activities based on the needs of the community.
- Assist in preparing, coordinating, and disseminating all recreation publicity including seasonal publications, Ballwin Life Magazine and flyers.
- Providing assistance to community organizations and to the general public.
- Maintaining records; prepares reports on participation, conducts participant program evaluations and surveys; assists with program registrations.
- Recreation revenue and expense recommendations to the Aquatic Manager for coordination of annual budget.
- Works cooperatively with neighboring municipalities, school districts and other organizations to coordinate services and facility use.
- Assist Manager with inventory and ordering of aquatic supplies.
Position will have responsibility for supervision of day-to-day operations including manager on duty shifts, cash drawer checks and closeouts
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Schedule Monthly In-services and Head Guard Meetings and keep records of attendance (Bi-weekly In-services and bi-weekly Head Guard Meetings during the summer season).
- Maintaining a clean and safe environment for staff and patrons at both aquatic facilities.
- Maintain reports for programs, such as attendance, program reviews, and evaluations for assigned programs. Including management of program registration (RecTrac) and profit/loss reports.
- Provide daily supervision and guidance for aquatic staff to meet departmental goals and objectives. Including following disciplinary policies and staff incentives.
- Instill a positive and attractive culture for staff, patrons, and community.
- At times, fill in as a Head Guard/Lifeguard as needed.
EQUIPMENT USED TO PERFORM THE JOB:
- Rescue Tube, Spine Board, Resuscitator Mask, Automated External Defibrillator, Pool Vacuum, Various Small Tools,
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Recreation or related field preferred.
- Three years of related Aquatic experience preferred.
- Possess or earn within 6 months a valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification.
- Possess or earn within 6 months a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) and CPR/First Aid Instructor Certification.
- Possess or earn within 6 months a valid Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification or Certified Pool and Spa Operator (CPO) certification.
- Must have a current driver's license.
- The ability to perform moderate physical labor as necessary and able to lift up to fifty pounds.
SUPERVISORY DUTIES
Supervises and gives work to part-time, seasonal, and contractual employees and explains routine methods. Specialists have accountability for the quality and quantity of the output of others under their direction. Solves problems and makes appropriate decisions while manager on duty and while supervising programs under their direction. Responsible for quality assurance and user input in areas under their supervision.
KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge and comprehension of community recreation and aquatic/fitness programs including accepted standards, principles, and concepts.
- Knowledge of optimal swimming pool water chemistry, temperature, and cleanliness standards.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, policies, and guidelines for the operation of public swimming pools.
- Ability to recruit, train, and certify lifeguards and others.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of operating a large, multi-pool aquatic facility.
- Skills in program planning and development.
- Knowledge of certification standards in the area of aquatics.
- Principles and practices of personnel supervision.
- General working knowledge of social media platforms and best practices.
- Ability to collect, analyze, and use social data to inform decision making.
- Computer programs such as Google Workspace .
- Preferred experience in marketing programs such as Canva and Reach.
- Communicate effectively internally and externally to resolve conflicts or personnel issues.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, while effectively planning for upcoming tasks or programs/events.
- Demonstrated professional public relations skills, effective interpersonal and communications skills, and
- Work a variety of shifts, including days, nights and weekends as needed.
- Supervise subordinates.
- Ability to operate office machines and equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The indoor environment provides for a safe and healthy work environment and is smoke and drug-free. Occasionally, it may be wet and humid, as well as moderately loud. The outdoor work environment may result in extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, and humidity.
