VHB’s Atlanta office is actively seeking an Archaeology Group Lead/Archaeology Manager to join our regional Environmental Services Group. The position would serve as the technical lead and manager for the Atlanta archaeology team. The Archaeology Team Leader manages the day-to-day operations of the team, ensuring the accuracy of technical reports, meeting schedules, and coordinating efforts to meet project compliance needs for Atlanta’s Environmental Group.
We are looking for a sharp, creative problem solver who is passionate about archaeological and historical properties. By working closely with our engineers, designers, planners, and clients, VHB strives to preserve and protect our shared cultural heritage across more than 30 offices along the East Coast.
Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct, lead, author, and/or review archaeological investigations, Cultural Resource Assessment Surveys, and Archaeological Resource Identification Surveys at the Phase I, II, and III levels of investigation.
- Lead and manage a large team of professional archaeologists.
- Manage scope, schedule, and budget for cultural resource projects.
- Conduct archival and historical background research.
- Assess archaeological site significance under Criterion D of the NRHP.
- Assess proposed infrastructure improvement and/or construction projects and other engineering related impacts to identified cultural resources.
- Prepare recommendations for the preservation, avoidance, and/or minimization of impacts to eligible or listed cultural resources.
- Coordinate regulatory compliance efforts with federal, state, and municipal agencies.
- Support other VHB departments and regional offices with archaeological and historic preservation planning.
- Provide artifact analysis and assist in curation efforts.
- Prepare field survey and geographic maps using the ESRI suite of software.
- Review/respond to requests for proposals, scopes, and work plans.
- Support and build client relationships.
- Assist with mentoring field, junior, and mid-level staff archaeologists.
Skills and Attributes
- Extensive knowledge and demonstrated experience coordinating and managing archaeological investigations.
- Familiarity working with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and knowledge of GDOT expectations and procedures preferred.
- Familiarity working with NEPA, ARPA, NHPA, NAGPRA.
- Experience implementing the survey methodology for conducting archaeological investigations in Georgia and the Southeast.
- Self-motivated and ambitious with an attention to detail
- Must be able to work independently and as a part of a team.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Knowledge of American history and Southeastern American archaeology.
- Ability to identify complex cultural resource issues and critically think to develop solutions.
- Motivated to lead and mentor others.
Qualifications
- A master’s degree (or higher) in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field required.
- Registered Professional Archaeologist preferred.
- Must meet the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) professional standards for archaeology.
- 11+ years of professional experience in cultural resource management required.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license.
The base salary range for this position is $100,000 - $120,000. This offer is determined based on a number of job-related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
