Position Overview
The role is ideal for a motivated Architectural Historian eager to expand into environmental planning while supporting infrastructure projects that involve environmental analysis and historic preservation. The successful candidate will work on projects across various public sectors and contribute to historical, architectural, and environmental assessments.
Key Responsibilities
- NEPA and Section 106 Compliance: Assist with projects that require compliance with NEPA regulations and the National Historic Preservation Act. This includes evaluating both natural and social environments as they pertain to historic preservation and environmental planning.
- Historic Property Research: Conduct research to support historic property inventories, National Register evaluations, and develop historical or architectural contexts.
- Field Investigations: Plan and lead field investigations for Historic Resource Surveys and Assessments. Travel, including overnight stays, may be required.
- Documentation and Reporting: Report on findings from research and field investigations, including NR eligibility recommendations and completing necessary architectural forms.
- Environmental Analysis for Design Projects: Assist with environmental assessments for multi-discipline design projects in markets like transportation, water, and facility development.
- Collaboration and Coordination: Work with internal teams, subconsultants, and regulatory and resource agencies to facilitate project success.
- Public Engagement: Support public engagement activities, which may include organizing and participating in public meetings.
- Project Management Support: Provide project management assistance, including drafting statements of services, developing cost proposals, and maintaining project records.
Key Qualifications and Skills
- Historic Preservation Expertise: Strong understanding of historic preservation principles, especially in compliance with Section 106.
- Research and Documentation: Ability to perform archival research and document historic properties in alignment with National Register criteria.
- Field Experience: Experience in field investigations and historic resource surveys.
- NEPA Knowledge: Familiarity with NEPA guidelines and regulations for environmental analysis.
- Collaborative Skills: Ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, regulatory bodies, and external stakeholders.
- Communication and Public Engagement: Strong communication skills to participate in public outreach and stakeholder meetings.
- Project Management Support: Experience with proposal development, cost estimation, and record-keeping for project management.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in history, historic preservation, architectural history, or closely related field. A master’s degree is highly desired but not required.
- Meet the Secretary of Interiors’ Professional Qualification Standards for Historic Architecture (Appendix A of 36 CFR Part 61).
- Minimum 7 years of experience and increasing responsibility in the AEC industry delivering consulting services for infrastructure projects.
- Thorough understanding of applicable federal and state environmental regulations.
- Communicates well verbally and in writing.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage and track data, project deliverables, and schedules.
- Strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Project).
- Proficient with Esri mapping software.
