About the Job
The Area Superintendent for Lifting & Handling is responsible for management oversight of a designated area in D920 - Rigging/Lifting & Handling operations. Manages and directs the daily activities of multiple operations to achieve department and facility goals and business objectives.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Goal setting, measuring attainment to the goals and meeting department cost objectives. The applicant should have a proven track record in safety, maintaining quality, achieving schedules, initiating process improvements and be a good communicator. Pro-active in areas of safety and demonstrated ability to improve safety records. Ability to motivate and train first line supervision.
Must demonstrate effective Lifting & Handling problem solving skills. Should promote employee development and training. Must be able to promote a positive team environment, as well as interact with all levels of management and the customer. Must be able to interface with Human Resources and resolve employee issues.
Products/Services: Those responsibilities directly associated with delivering products or services including but not limited to those related to manufacturing operations, customer interactions, or meeting operational performance standards.
Coordinate with external customers and internal partners/stakeholders:
- External customers include: USN, Groton and Newport News shipyards
- Internal partners/stakeholders include: Area Superintendents and Supervisors within own department; other Waterfront and Shop Area Superintendents and Supervisors; Support trades including staging, manpower and material planning, engineering and test, human resources and training, safety, quality, and facilities maintenance
Deliver quality services:
- Services include: On-time delivery and movement of manufactured parts and modular outfitted hulls which includes tanks, frames, decks, fixtures, raw materials, machinery and equipment and other items as needed
- Drive quality by monitoring the overall quality performance and applying corrective actions to address deficiencies
- Achieve cost/schedule objectives by adjusting manpower, material, and equipment as per the allocated budget
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement efforts to support program goals
- Request improvements to production facilities and equipment
- Identify critical material needs for near-term production events
Process: Those responsibilities related to managing business processes of a general nature, such as safety, planning, programming, and budgeting for the department.
- Ensure compliance with safety and environmental programs within the workforce and workplace.
- Identify needs and provide input to department manager for the long-term facility and capital plans.
- Manage risk impact to cost, schedule and objectives; establish mitigation strategies to meet performance objectives.
- Identify emergent resource needs, prioritize and negotiate for resources to meet immediate production requirements.
- Provide purchase requests and documentation to manager.
- Lead critique investigations; implement corrective actions.
- Review passdown information with pertinent Area Superintendents and members of management in D920 for pertinent issues and matters related to production facilities, equipment, and procedures.
People: Those responsibilities related to managing human capital and culture within the department or other areas of responsibility.
- Provide input on manpower needs to the department manager
- Assist with succession planning and talent management within the department
- Recruit internally, interview, and recommend best candidates for supervisory positions and when necessary, hourly employees
- Improve workforce capabilities by identifying needed training and development; plan and execute training within the shop
- Establish and communicate work expectations; assess overall workforce performance and productivity; positively motivate the workforce.
- Create an engaging workplace climate; reinforce desired workforce values and behaviors; continuously improve morale
- Manage individual performance of supervisors; develop their technical and leadership skills.
- Consult with pertinent Area Superintendents and members of management in D920 for pertinent issues and matters related to their respective workforce and workplace climate

This position is located at the Quonset Point facility in North Kingstown, RI.
Qualifications:Qualifications:
Required:
- High School Diploma/ GED
- 2+ years of supervisory/leadership experience
- 1 year of demonstrated experience in Rigging/Lifting and Handling
- Must be available to work all shifts and extended hours as business needs dictate
- Must have the ability to interface with Human Resources and resolve employee issues
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance through the department of defense
Preferred:
- 5 plus years of lifting & handling experience
- 5 plus years of shipbuilding trade experience
- supervisory/leadership experience at Electric Boat
- Vocational, Technical and Community Colleges or Apprentice programs
- Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, MS project, ATA, Outlook, EWP
- FLG/BLG/MDU training and experience
