Hours: Fulltime, 8-5, Mon – Fri, (some flexability) also possible events,
Location: Amesbury, MA
Pay: $30-$32/hr.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Turning Point Inc is seeking for an experienced ASL Certified Interpreter to our growing team. The ASL Certified Interpreter, under general supervision, provides sign language and oral interpreting services to intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals who are deaf and/or hard of hearing, as well as hearing management and employees working with deaf and/or hard of hearing individuals.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs scheduled assignments involving interactive discussions for team/houses meetings, behavior plans, guardianship meetings, as well as company required trainings between deaf and/or hard-of-hearing employees and hearing managers/employees, family members, clinicians and instructors as requested by the Director of Program Services, Coordinator, Program Manager and Human Resources
- Responds to requests to interpret training information, behavior plans, guardianship or other legal forms and disciplinary documents in a wide variety of settings, including residential programs, office sites, classroom settings, and doctor’s offices for scheduled doctor’s appointments that are unable to provide an interpreter for our deaf/hard of hearing individuals.
- Utilizes knowledge of ASL and professional interpreting techniques and procedures, deaf culture, specialized vocabulary to clarify workplace and/or job specific questions and information exchanged between the deaf and/or hard of hearing individuals and hearing management and employees.
- Sits in our Human Resources interviews with deaf and/or hard of hearing candidates applying for employment, as well as newly candidates completed new employee paperwork.
- Attends and participates in workshops and conferences to improve and maintain interpreting skill level and keep abreast of interpreting trends by studying specialized ASL vocabulary and other materials.
- May provide employees with ASL resource materials.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS/BA or equivalent experience equal to a four-year college or university with major coursework in American Sign Language, interpreting, education, social work, or a related field
- Completion of an Interpreter Training program, and 1+ year of increasingly responsible experience in interpreting for deaf and hard of hearing individuals
- Possession of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification of Interpretation (CI) and Certificate of Transliteration (CT), National Interpreter Certification (NIC) is required. An Advanced or Master certification from the National Association of Deaf (NAD) Level 4 or Level 5 certification is desired.
- Utilizing American Sign Language and interpreting techniques in a wide variety of communication settings
- A thorough knowledge of deaf cultural values and general issues in the field of deafness
- Knowledgeable regarding current trends and development in the field of interpreting, as well as applicable Federal, State, and local laws, and regulatory codes.
- Ability to attend and participate in workshops to improve interpreting/transliterating skills.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license in order to drive to specific locations
- Ability to pass a CORI, Driving Record, and Fingerprinting checks prior to beginning of work and continued employment
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills are required
- Knowledge of Outlook and/or Goggle email
