POSITION SUMMARY:
The Asset Protection Specialist role at Ocean State Job Lot (“OSJL” and “Company”) is responsible for protecting company assets and monitoring store activities to reduce property or financial losses. This role partners closely with store leadership and the Human Resources team, when applicable, to investigate known or suspected internal theft, external theft, and vendor fraud. The Asset Protection Specialist role interacts with associates at all levels of the organization as well as customers, persons stopped for shoplifting, law enforcement and court officials.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Detect and respond to external theft and fraud by working undercover within assigned stores.
- Work as a team with store leadership and associates in combating property or financial loss in the stores.
- Identify and analyze external theft trends, utilizing information in Company reports and information gathered from store leadership and associates.
- Serve as liaison between Company, law enforcement and court officials to effectively prosecute external theft and fraud.
- Support the detection and resolution of all associate theft and fraud.
- Promote a safe environment for all store customers and associates.
- Conduct safety and asset protection spot-checks and audits to ensure store compliance with core policies and procedures.
- Support compliance with regulatory requirements including, but not limited to, OSHA and Store Sanitation agency mandates.
- Weekly travel is required during seasonal times depending on the needs of the business. Some evening and/or weekend shifts may be required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- 1-3 years experience as an Asset Protection Store Detective is preferred.
- Some proficiency in Google Mail and Docs is preferred.
- Ability to work nights and weekends.
- Strong interpersonal skills, conflict resolution skills, and problem-solving skills.
- Must have a clean criminal record and satisfactorily pass the requirements of a background check and drug test.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, a good driving record, and reliable transportation.
- Must be able to communicate in and comprehend English; bilingual in Spanish is preferred. Adequate math and reading skills, and accurate communication skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Duties are performed across a range of stores in a designated market. The market may change according to Company size and need.
- Travel may be required to multiple stores in a given week, including travel to two or more stores in a single day. This necessitates driving in a vehicle for extensive periods of time in varying weather conditions.
- Individuals must have the ability to move around the sales floor in a retail environment for an extended period of time.
- Conditions for performing job functions will change, depending on the constraints of each store location, as well as internal and external environmental conditions.
- Some work in a climate controlled environment. Some sedentary, and frequent near vision use for reading and computer use.
