Assist. or Assoc. Prof. of Architecture in Health Design & Wellness - The University of Kansas
Lawrence, KS
About the Job
The School of Architecture & Design at the University of Kansas (KU) invites applications for a tenure/tenure-track position of Assistant or Associate Professor of Architecture with an emphasis in Health & Wellness Design beginning in the fall of 2025. The Architecture Department's faculty’s core purpose is to prepare new practitioners in the design of the built environment, and for the path to architectural licensure. It seeks ways by which humanity can inhabit this planet in a sustainably healthy way. It does so primarily through its NAAB accredited Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) program and its soon to be accredited Interior Architecture program.
The effects of built and natural environments on human health and well-being are now recognized as major aspects of how architects and designers fulfill their professional roles in the creation of healthcare, residential, educational, and workplace facilities. The increase in the use of evidence-based research and design methods is transforming the ways architects and designers are educated to meet the technical and regulatory expectations of building clients and users. This position will be central in implementing coursework in this area of knowledge in the professional and graduate curricula, fostering funded research and industry partnerships in healthcare environments, and coordinating existing and future programs and facilities in the School’s Institute of Health & Wellness Design. This position will also strengthen and develop programs in coursework and research agenda in environments that promote the health, safety and welfare of the public. The faculty is committed to excellence in applying our knowledge and experience in educating the next generation of architects. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to its core purpose as described above.
In addition to the M.Arch. and IA degrees, the AD also offers an MA in Architecture, a PhD, and multiple certificate programs. It has summer, semester, and year-long internship programs, as well as foreign-study programs around the globe. In addition to Studio 804, our Health and Wellness Design Institute and the School's Center for Design Research, the School of Architecture & Design has recognized areas of expertise in Design-Build, Sports and Leisure, Interior Architecture, Public Interest Design, Historic Preservation, Sustainable Design, and Smart Cities.
The School of Architecture & Design is committed to providing safe, respectful, supportive, and welcoming teaching, learning, and working environments for its community of students, staff and faculty. We believe that the process of design is elevated when differences are respected, ideas are shared, and people are connected. We recognize that all people should have a say in the creation of their own environment. We aspire to advance a culture of excellence and representation at the School of Architecture & Design. This task demands a collaborative approach and one that integrates culturally competent protocols and policies in our everyday ideas, thinking and practices
KU’s excellence is a result of the rich tapestry of experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds of our faculty, staff, students, and colleagues from across our nation and the globe. At KU, we invest in continuous learning and growth by creating a climate where people engage in respectful dialogue and debate and support each other’s success. We foster a culture of care where each person is seen, heard and valued. When people feel a true sense of belonging, we believe they are better able to reach their full potential and achieve remarkable things.
The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the effective date of the appointment.
