Office of Academic Enhancement (Empower Me First)
Core Job Summary
The Assistant Director for the Office of Academic Enhancement’s Empower Me First works in support of first-generation college students at the University of Miami, primarily by way of one-on-one and group advising, the creation and execution of original and collaborative programming, and by deliberately and strategically connecting students to resources and opportunities on and off campus.
Core Job Functions
The Assistant Director for Empower Me First leads academic support and programmatic initiatives to foster first-generation student success and to celebrate first-generation students at UM. This position also provides information and resources to the University’s faculty and staff to support the first-generation student population. The Assistant Director supervises a team of peer mentors and interacts and collaborates with students, community and national associations, vendors, and various University partners. The Assistant Director reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Prestigious Awards and Fellowships and Programs of Academic Excellence units to achieve the mission and goals of the Office of Academic Enhancement.
Empower Me First Responsibilities:
+ Develop and facilitate orientation sessions for first-generation students and their families.
+ Facilitate the academic and professional development of first-generation students
+ Implement intervention strategies for first-generation students identified and/or referred to Empower Me First for academic and/or transitional support.
+ Conduct one-on-one and group meetings to facilitate academic support and connect students with appropriate campus resources.
+ Record notes on student appointments in EAB Navigate.
+ Collaborate within and outside of the OAE to create and facilitate educational programs supporting first-generation student success.
+ Plan, market, and conduct the National First-Generation College Student Celebration at the University.
+ Coordinate the Empower Me First Mentorship program.
+ Lead training sessions for advisors, faculty, staff, and student staff on supporting first-generation students.
+ Build resources educating the University community on supporting first-generation students
+ Employ marketing strategies aligned with departmental branding standards to promote Empower Me First initiatives, including celebrating first-generation students.
+ Provide recommendations to help make services culturally competent and designed to support students from diverse backgrounds.
+ Develop short- and long-term goals for Empower Me First initiatives that align with departmental goals.
+ Create learning outcomes for Empower Me First initiatives and develop assessment strategies to implement.
+ Maintain the University’s active status as a First-Gen Forward institution through NASPA’s Center for First-Generation Student Success.
Additional Responsibilities:
+ Cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with university community members.
+ Serve on committees as assigned or requested.
+ Assist with updating the Office of Academic Enhancement website and publications.
+ Recruit, hire, train, manage and evaluate peer mentors.
+ Assist with the strategic planning process for the Academic Initiatives unit.
+ Participate in departmental and unit meetings
+ Attend Advisor Consortium meetings
+ Represent the OAE at campus events, which may include some evenings and/or weekends.
+ Perform other general or specific duties as assigned.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and four years of relevant experience Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of students Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written Demonstrated ability to work as an effective and collaborative team member Ability to take direction Demonstrated willingness to take initiative Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion Strong organizational skills Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree and two years of relevant experience An appropriate combination of relevant education, certifications, and/or work experience will be considered
