About the Job
Some of what you'll be doing:
As the Assistant Director, General Accounting you are a key member of the department leadership team, responsible for achieving fiscal integrity, financial transparency, public funds accountability, and mitigating audit exposures.
+ You will provide leadership for research and full compliance with industry-prescribed and evolving accounting and financial reporting standards, and assessment of complex/strategic Port business and financial transactions.
+ You will establish, maintain, and monitor robust internal controls for accounting and financial reporting, ensuring public funds and assets, and mitigating risk exposure.
+ You will guide direct reports in managerial positions, ensuring they provide hands-on leadership to professional staff.
+ You will also offer guidance to indirect reports, drive ongoing operational improvements, align with Port strategies, and oversee budget planning.
+ You will proactively formulate, revise, and enforce Port-wide financial and accounting policies to ensure proper public funds accountability, financial integrity, and to address any audit compliance findings during our numerous annual audits.
+ You will oversee the progress of audits and address any emerging audit issues. Assist Port stakeholders in resolving audit-related matters. Interface with senior-level audit leadership to address key issues that impact the Port. Contribute to closing audits, including participating in exit conferences with the Commission Audit Committee and Executive Leadership Team, as well as developing corrective action plans.
+ You will serve as the primary liaison between the Port and Northwest Seaport Alliance, you will oversee finance and accounting matters. Your responsibilities include managing accounting for North Harbor (Port of Seattle side) transactions and cash flow reporting.
Who you are:
+ Experienced – You have six (6) years of accounting/financial management experience including responsibility for accounting operations and systems related to general accounting, tax administration, and financial reporting, including three (3) years supervisory experience and managing a function related to accounting operations and systems and/or financial reporting.
+ Certification - You are an active Certified Public Accountant.
+ Desired – You possess a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or Business Administration.

You also have a broad knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations including business tax administration.
+ Critical Thinking – You have strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking skills. You can apply systems thinking and link departmental goals and initiatives with department strategies and objectives.
+ Communication – You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to garner trust and build strong, credible relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. You have excellent presentation skills with the ability to communicate complex financial information to non-technical audiences in a variety of public and private settings.
What else you need to know:
+ Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role.
+ Work Environment - This work will take place in a hybrid/in-office setting at Management’s discretion.
+ Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
