Position Overview
Under the leadership and supervision of the Director of Housing and Residence Life, this position is directly responsible for the supervision and management of on-campus housing including the educational and administrative efforts for the Office of Housing and Residence Life. The Assistant Director provides leadership and supervision to professional staff and assists in the development of policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, or related field and three (3) years supervisory experience working in a university housing system; or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Skills in community development to include, organizing and planning student programming, student group advisement, and assessment efforts
- Ability to analyze, interpret, and apply policy and procedural guidelines.
- Demonstrate strong communication and problem solving skills.
- Ability to maintain positive working relations with campus community.
Preferred Qualifications
- Residence Life experience is strongly preferred.
- Excellent customer service skills, effective oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office computer applications (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Ability to complete tasks independently and in groups.
- Great interpersonal skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural and social backgrounds.
- Responsible, reliable and dependable.

Job Duties:
- STAFF SUPERVISION AND DEVELOPMENT
- Foster a healthy and positive work environment for all student staff employees and supervisees.
- Supervise various Housing and Residence Life Student Staff including Resident Assistants, Desk Assistants, a Lead Desk Assistant, interns etc.
- Provide ongoing training and professional development for student staff members related to their position duties and responsibilities through Fall and Winter Trainings, supervision and team meetings, and annual evaluations.
- Facilitate personal growth opportunities and experiences for student staff members related to and beyond their student staff position to become leaders within the university community.
- Promote a team mentality amongst staff members to foster team unity.
- COMMUNITY DEVLOPMENT
- Foster a positive and healthy student centered environment that supports the academic achievement and holistic development of residents.
- Serve as an engaged and positive contributing community member and leader within the residential community including being visible and accessible to residents, role modeling responsible behavior, maintaining personal integrity, and commitment to the mission and vision of the university.
- Serve as an advisor and knowledgeable resource to both assist and connect residents with campus and community resources when needed.
- Advise resident student leaders in Community Council through attending team meetings and leadership development meetings.
- Educate residents about Housing and University policies, protocols, and procedures.
- STUDENT SAFETY AND WELFARE
- Oversee safety and duty procedures for the residential community including promoting and enforcing policies that protect and ensure the general welfare of students.
- Communicate, uphold, administer, and evaluate policies related to student life within the University and the Residence Hall.
- Exercise good judgment, ethical decision making, and responsible citizenship both on and off campus.
- Effectively respond to and manage emergency and/or crisis situations via participation as the second level responder in campus wide duty coverage, which requires evening and weekend availability.
- Serve as a responsible employee for allegations regulated under Title IX.
- HOUSING AND RESIDENCE LIFE OPERATIONS
- Communicate, support, and implement the philosophy and mission of the University and the Office of Housing and Residence Life.
- Lead and coordinate in conjunction with supervisor, various Residence Life processes and committees including, but not limited to, student staff recruitment, selection, and training.
- Assist with coordination of all aspects of facilities management, assignment, and meal plan procedures within the Residence Hall.
- Serve on University committees, search committees, student organization advisor etc. as determined by supervisor and supervisee.
- Coordinate residence halls tours for prospective students and families, and prospective student events sponsored by Undergraduate Admissions.
- Assist with maintenance and updating department website, social media, and student housing portal. Provide support and leadership during summer housing and conferences operations.
- ADMINISTRATION:
- Collaborate with the Director of Housing and Residence Life to develop goals for planning and evaluation
- Attend all department meetings
- Overseeing departmental committees and serve on university committees as needed
- Assisting in the development and implementation of policies and procedures
- Reviewing and revising publications, monitoring/editing the housing web page.
- SUMMER SCHOOL/CONFERENCES:
- Responsible for, or assisting with, the day-to-day operation of summer school and conferences to include check-ins, check-outs, and staff supervision; interfacing with internal and external stakeholders.
Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 5 PM, flexible to work occasional evenings and weekends
