The Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation is a key leadership role responsible for assisting in the administration, planning, and operation of the Parks and Recreation Department. This role supports the Director in managing the park operations, facility maintenance division, fleet division, department’s activities, programs, and staff, ensuring the efficient delivery of high-quality park services to the community. The Assistant Director will help oversee the maintenance of parks, facilities, athletic fields, outdoor pool, and open spaces, manage departmental budgets, and work to enhance the department’s offerings while fostering a positive, safe, and engaging environment for all residents.
Essential Duties
- Fosters and promotes a workplace culture based on professionalism, collaboration, respect, and accountability.
- Exercises sound judgment and takes responsible actions as a city representative during contact with the public, elected and appointed officials, developers, contractors, and other City employees.
- Understands, demonstrates, and supports the mission of the City of Boerne and Parks and Recreation Department.
- Assists in planning, administering, monitoring, and justifying the department’s operating and capital improvement budgets, and forecasts department revenues and expenses.
- Evaluates department operations and activities, and recommends changes and improvements to existing programs, priorities, policies, and procedures based on research, analysis, and recommendations by staff.
- Researches and prepares special project reports for the Parks and Recreation Director, including preparing reports, plans, policies, and procedures, provide recommendations on plans, and other research activities.
- Assists with developing the department's master plans; provide input on new park construction and existing park rehabilitation and repair projects; develop and make recommendations; monitor budgetary expenditures; track and report the status of contracts awarded to external vendors
- Leads the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of management staff, while also offering counseling and coaching as needed; ensures compliance with all City policies and procedures.
- Develops and implements projects and programs for the Park Operations, Facilities, Cemetery, and Fleet Divisions and establishes broad priorities and work sequences including but not limited to a strategic Plan, Quarterly and Annual year-end reports.
- Develops long-term scheduling and park planning for maintenance, as well as develop departmental and individual goals, strategies, and management plans to provide effective park operations.
- Assists in preparation of and monitors the parks, aquatics, facilities, and fleet operations budget.
- Develops specifications and bid documents for equipment, materials, planning and construction efforts.
- Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to parks and recreation.
- Oversees the inventory of supplies and equipment and approves purchases as needed.
- Responds appropriately and efficiently to inquiries, complaints, or requests from the public.
- Collaborates with other city departments in joint projects and planning efforts to achieve desired results for the Department and City.
- Assists the Director of Parks and Recreation in coordinating the operation, maintenance, and improvements of the Boerne Cemetery and serves as the Director in their absence
- Serves as essential emergency personnel when required.
- Regular and prompt attendance is an essential function of the position.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in park administration or a related field. Minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience in parks and recreation management, including supervisory experience. or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED
Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license. Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) or Certified Parks and Recreation Executive (CPRE) or obtain within 10-12 months.
