Northern District of Alabama POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT ASSISTANT FEDERAL PUBLIC DEFENDER - Birmingham Office

       The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of Alabama is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Federal Defender for the Birmingham office. The Federal Public Defender Office provides legal representation and criminal defense services to individuals charged with federal crimes who are financially unable to retain counsel. Assistant Federal Defenders provide direct representation of indigent persons charged with federal crimes in the Northern District of Alabama, on appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and in post-conviction matters brought in federal court.

        This position is for a licensed attorney with knowledge of federal criminal law and procedure and experience litigating criminal cases and issues. Applicants must be an active member in good standing with a State Bar. Furthermore, applicants must possess excellent research, writing and oral advocacy skills, experience in computer-assisted legal research, the ability to understand and manage complex factual and legal issues, a reputation for integrity, and a commitment to the representation of those unable to afford counsel.

         Salary is dependent on experience, qualifications, and in accord with Administrative Office of U. S. Courts, Defender Services Office, and U.S. Courts guidelines. This position is full-time with federal salary and benefits. Employees of the Federal Public Defender are members of the judicial branch of government. They are considered at-will employees and are not covered by the Civil Service Reform Act. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory background investigation. Salary payable only by Electronic Funds Transfer.
