About the Job
This position is located at the Calf Milk Replacer Research Facility at the Purina Animal Nutrition Research Facility in Gray Summit, MO. The assistant manager will work closely with Calf Milk Research unit manager to ensure the day-to-day management and operation of the unit and calves. A large portion of this person's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, calf feeding, vaccinations, health checks, data collection, trial preparation, sample collection, etc. This person will also have direct reports and be responsible for creating the unit employees' schedule.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the unit manager and the Dairy Research Manager on research trial development and sample and data collection.
- Data entry, data management, ensure data quality, data summary, and writing research protocols and preparing final reports
- Work with the unit manager on the day-to-day care and management of the calves at the Calf Milk facility.
- Management of inventory of all supplies needed for research trials and the day-to-day operation of the Calf Milk unit.
- Work with the unit manager and other unit employees to ensure all Land O'Lakes EHS rules, regulations, and trainings are followed and completed.
- Be available after hours and on weekends/ holidays on an emergency basis along with the unit manager.
- Work with the unit manager to ensure all animal care and research practices are up-to-date and follow guidelines established by the Animal Care and Use Committee.
- Establish and maintain working relationship and communication with the Operations team to ensure facility is maintained and operating properly
- Directly supervise 4 part-time research technicians
- Aid in the training, supervision, and direction of research technicians and day-to-day tasks
- Typical work hours are Monday through Friday 6 am to 2:30 pm, with periodic shifted hours as needed for meetings and project-related activities
Experience/Education (Required): Minimum of bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Animal Nutrition, or related field.
Competencies-Skills (Required):
- Experience caring for young calves
- Research and data collection experience
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs
Competencies-Skills (Preferred):
- Experience in team leadership and collaboration
- Skid steer experience
- Livestock trailer experience
- Blood collection experience
