Job Description:Assistant Manager, Multi-Cultural Media Relations
Exciting Opportunity at MSK:
We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Manager, Multi – Cultural Media Relations. You will position MSK as a leader in cancer research and patient care by pursuing national, local, and scientific trade media relations activities that highlight MSK's experts, research, institutional narratives, and priorities. You will actively engage multicultural media and the NYC regional press, developing and executing innovative media strategies that highlight MSK's expertise, groundbreaking research, and key institutional initiatives. The ideal candidate will be adept at managing press relationships and implementing forward-thinking media campaigns that resonate with diverse audiences.
Position Overview
- Manages media requests by providing strategic guidance, appropriate information and coordinating interviews with MSK staff and patients.
- Develops, coordinates and supervises film and photo shoots at the Center while fact checking information for journalists’ articles that include information attributed to MSK or its staff.
- Prepare and advise Center staff and MSK’s patients regarding media interviews while ensuring that patient privacy regulations are adhered to.
- Proactively and strategically secures press coverage for our research and other newsworthy activities by building narratives, identifying, writing, and disseminating news releases and other press materials.
- Pitching story ideas to media based on newsworthy topics and MSK institutional priority areas.
- Develops positive ongoing working relationships with regional/NYC, national and trade reporters, and producers with an emphasis on multi-cultural and Spanish-speaking media as well as with MSK's employees to successfully initiate media coverage of our activities and achievements.
- Helps coordinate press opportunities and other events that may have media involvement.
- Manages media relations outreach related to MSK staff participation in major annual medical and scientific conferences.
- Serves as a key member of the content team within the larger Communications department which helps to determine departmental communications strategies as a whole and is a contributor and driver of MSK’s social media and blog content.
- Writes effective media materials in Spanish and communicates with media in Spanish.
- Responsible for keeping abreast of social media tools and techniques, and especially newer communication channels that are being used by multi-cultural audiences.
Key Qualifications
- 4-7 years in marketing/communications roles within leading agencies and client marketing/communications/brand management for consumer products and services.
- Speaks and writes in fluently in Spanish, experience with multi-Cultural audiences.
- Healthcare media experience preferred.
- Existing media relationships vital
Core Skills
- Proficient in developing and updating media lists.
- In-depth knowledge of the evolving media landscape and the ability to develop creative strategies for reaching diverse audiences based on their news consumption habits.
- Fluency writing and speaking Spanish is required as well as being a multi-cultural expert on media consumption, narrative development, and influencers.
- Fully understands the cultural nuances of writing for different audiences.
- Skilled at building positive relationships with key members of MSK’s leadership, staff and stakeholders that aid in ongoing information sharing about the Center’s activities.
- Strong network of relationships with multicultural and NYC/regional media outlets.
Additional Information:
- This role is based at MSK’s 633 Third Avenue location.
- Schedule: Full Time, Hybrid onsite once a week
- Serves on-call approximately one week each month, during which urgent press inquiries and hospital alerts are responded to 24 hours a day, including on weekends and occasional holidays.
- Works closely with Hospital Administration/Administrator on Call to respond to media inquiries at night and on weekends, some travel may be required.
- Reporting to Senior Director, Media Relations
Pay Range: $80,300 – 128,400
