Overview
ASSISTANT PORT ENGINEER:
UIC, Bowhead Transport seeks a year-round, (Land Based) Assistant Port Engineer to oversee the maintenance operations of vessels and equipment. The Assistant Port Engineer will be responsible for coordinating vessel repairs and maintenance operations with the Bowhead Port Engineer and will work according to Bowhead Transport Management’s direction.
The Assistant Port Engineer will be responsible for maintaining a safe work environment on all Bowhead Transport vessels and will be required to assist the Port Captain when renewing vessel licenses and schedule / oversee timely USCG, ABS and other inspections annually.

Responsibilities
Assistant Port Engineer Essential Functions Include:
- Assistant Port Engineer will be responsible for maintaining all Bowhead equipment land based or at sea. Maintaining equipment may include but is not limited to ensuring all Bowhead equipment is winterized, worn or broken parts are repaired / replaced, appropriate storage is secured when needed and equipment is in safe operational condition at all times.
- Assist the Port Captain and Port Engineer when Scheduling, planning and overseeing haul outs, shipyard work and off season / In Season repairs and maintenance on all Bowhead Transport vessels and equipment
- Coordinating the purchase of equipment or operational supplies with the Port Engineer as needed: Coordinating the purchase of supplies may involve Bowhead Transport captains, engineers, deckhands and Bowhead management staff.
- Travel as needed: Assistant Port Engineer will be required to travel at times depending on the circumstances involved and at the direction of the Bowhead Port Engineer.
- Field Work: Assistant Port Engineer at times will be required to assist Bowhead vessel crews or land based Bowhead staff loading, lashing, consolidating and manifesting, cargo as needed in any / all port locations when occasional additional assistance is required
- Other duties as assigned by the Bowhead Port Engineer or other Bowhead management staff.
Licenses, Credentials, Requirements and Experience:
- Valid Drivers License
- Local resident of Seward Alaska or surrounding area preferred.
- General PC knowledge preferred including; spreadsheet software, word processing software and knowledge of MS Office Suite.
- Strong interpersonal skills, positive (Anything is Possible) attitude, problem solving ability and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
- Individual should be stable under pressure and have the ability to withstand the stresses associated with the job's mental demands, physical demands, potentially hazardous situations and unpredictable weather
- Individual will be required to work a flexible schedule often times requiring hours outside of normal office hours, (8-5) as needed and will likely exceed 40 hours per week occasionally during the primary operating season, (April – October)
Qualifications
Physical Demands: The work environment varies and includes, but is not limited to: shipyards, docks, ports, bays, beaches, waterways, office space, equipment rooms, warehouse space, construction zones, and outdoor environments. Work hours may fluctuate outside of normal duty hours. While performing the duties of this job, the individual is:
- Required to work with hands performing mechanic / engineer duties with tools, equipment and supplies.
- Frequently required to stand and/or walk and routinely required to reach with hands and arms.
- Routinely required to stand, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or squat.
- Regularly required to sit for prolonged periods at a desk or workspace utilizing computer phones and office supplies.
- Required to sit for prolonged periods during travel by plane or auto.
- Frequently lifts and /or moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 75 pounds.
- Occasionally lifts and/or moves 75-100 pounds with the assistance of deckhands and/or heavy lifting equipment.
Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs
All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UIC Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements.
If working on a DOT project, employees must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
