Job Summary
The Utah Museum of Fine Arts ( UMFA ) at the University of Utah is looking for a highly motivated and well-organized individual to support the Collections team in the fabrication of exhibition furniture.
Responsibilities
Working under the direction of the Director of Collections and/or other Collections and Exhibitions staff as assigned to:
- Build and finish exhibition cases, pedestals, risers, and other furniture according to provided specifications.
- Build and/or install exhibition elements including walls, temporary wall systems, and theatrical elements in Museum galleries.
- Fabricate shipping crates, storage platforms and other items for the needs of exhibition and permanent storage of art objects.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Five years experience in exhibit preparation, carpentry and fabrication, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Working knowledge of display techniques and specifications including understanding of various materials used in fabricating displays; ability to secure and pack materials for shipping. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are required in order to interpret instructions and present exhibit preparation information. This position is not responsible for providing patient care. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
Preferences
- Good hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and spatial reasoning.
- Ability to follow instructions and plan ahead.
- Work well with supervisors and coworkers.
- Have basic math skills required to measure and install artworks.
- Experience in cabinet making/woodworking and use of common shop tools is a plus.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including bending, kneeling, pulling, pushing, walking, standing for long periods of time, lifting fifty pounds from floor to approximately fifty inches, climb ladders, operate power tools requiring two hands.
- Have excellent vision or vision that can be corrected to excellent with glasses or contacts.
- Pass a criminal background check.
