About the Job
The Assistant Preparator/Preparator [title commensurate with experience] works closely with the Head Preparator in the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions throughout the Hunter campus and offsite. The Assistant Preparator/Preparator supports the protection and display of works of art, facilitates the movement of art throughout the campus, and should have basic carpentry, painting, framing and mount-making skills. Knowledge of design software such as InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop is a plus. This position is part of a six-member Curatorial department and will work closely with both curators and the registrar and collections manager.
Key Responsibilities
- With Head Preparator, the Assistant Preparator/Preparator will:
- Work on logistics planning to facilitate adherence to the exhibition and rotation schedules
- Install artwork within the Hunter Museum, in the Sculpture Garden, and occasionally offsite
- Pack and unpack art objects
- Transportation of art objects to/from the Museum and within the Hunter campus
- Construction of casework, props, etc. for exhibition needs
- Design and production of crates for art objects with input from Registrar.
- Painting as needed for exhibitions
- Assist with lighting needs in all spaces
- Matting and framing of artwork
- Care and maintenance of museum galleries
- Care and maintenance of preparation and storage areas
- Care and maintenance of the wood shop
- Photography of art objects and of gallery installations
- Care and maintenance of Museum sculptures in garden and offsite
- Occasional repair and restoration of frames
- Design, fabricate and maintain Interactive spaces
- Additional Duties:
- Coordinate with outside contractors when needed.
- Evening or weekend manager as required.
- Occasional installation of Audio/Visual equipment in the galleries.
- Assist with major Museum fundraising events such as Spectrum.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including assisting other departments.
Key Requirements
- High school diploma, BA preferred
- 3-5 years museum or gallery installation experience
- Practical experience in painting, lighting technology, woodworking and fabrication Some knowledge of technology-based artworks
- In depth knowledge of art handling and museum installation practices
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Ability to work with a variety of staff and volunteers
- Driver's License (required to operate Museum vehicles)
Full-time (40 hours/week), salaried (Ranging from $45,000 - 48,000/year, commensurate on experience)
