Summary: Under the supervision of the Principal of the North Campus, this position involves administration and supervision of special education center-based programs, including classrooms for the Severely Multiply Impaired (SXI), Severely Cognitively Impaired (SCI) and Autistic Impaired (AI), for students with disabilities up to age 18. Provides instructional leadership to staff including: curriculum planning, review and implementation; and professional development. Responsible for day-to-day building administration including student attendance, the safety and welfare of students, employees and visitors. Ensures a safe, pleasant and effective educational atmosphere, and enforces school policy.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities: An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (Does not include all tasks employee may be expected to perform.)
- Supervises and evaluates professional and support staff. Responsibilities include: interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Reviews individual student records to determine eligibility and placement for Torrant programs in collaboration with local districts.
- Evaluates and adjusts educational programs/services to ensure compliance with state and school board standards and best practices. This includes, but is not limited to, curriculum development; positive behavior supports; IEP planning, writing and implementation; alternative assessments; and transition services.
- Participates in processes and support related to Torrant staff, including assignments, mentoring, and professional development.
- Assists instructors with curriculum delivery and development.
- Assists staff in developing student IEPs.
- Assists staff in dealing with student management issues in the classroom and attendance.
- Assists with the effective management of special education transportation, as assigned. These duties require occasionally driving to other worksites.
- Establishes and maintains effective relationships with colleges, community organizations and other schools to coordinate educational and field experiences for teachers, nurse interns, and therapist interns.
- Maintains relations with parents, parent groups, volunteers, and outside agencies.
- Coordinates preparation and submission of data required by government agencies.
- Develops and implements policies and procedures of the North Campus and the JCISD.
- Assists in the maintenance of a school atmosphere conducive to learning good citizenship, cooperation and socially acceptable behavior patterns.
- Participates in district-wide activities, in-services and committees, as appropriate.
- Regular and predictable in-person attendance is required for this position.
- Serves as administrative leader of the school in the absence of the Principal, as assigned.
Education And/Or Experience: Minimum master's degree in special education or educational leadership. A minimum of three years successful special education teaching or ancillary service experience. Applicants with an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education may be considered. Applicants with successful experience in staff evaluation, staff development, school improvement process, and the development, delivery and evaluation of curriculum may be given preference. Knowledge of budgeting. Knowledge of the effective use of technology in education. Successful experience in relationship building and working with special needs students of varying skill levels.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid State of Michigan special education teaching or ancillary service certificate. Valid Michigan driver license and good driving record. Must have Michigan administrative certification or meet Michigan requirements for continuing education required to achieve administrative certification. Must possess or be eligible for temporary approval of a Special Education Supervisor Approval.
Employment Date, Salary, and Fringe Benefits: Anticipated employment date is January 6, 2025. This is a 52-week position. Placement on the Administration Salary Schedule depends upon qualifications and experience; new employee starting salary range is $98,389- $115,668. Paid health, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurances, sick and vacation days.
