Details
DUTIES : (1) Work directly with the Woodwind Area Head to make sure all classes and ensembles in the saxophone area are covered and the highest standards of excellence are maintained in the curriculum; (2) help students stay on track to graduate in the various degree plans offered for saxophone majors and minors; (3) teach assigned saxophone and woodwind-related courses which may be include Applied Lessons, Woodwind Instrument Study II ( MUSC 1772), Undergraduate Chamber Music ( MUSC 4430), Graduate Chamber Music ( MUSC 6430), Doctoral Instrument Literature ( MUSC 7371), and/or Graduate Woodwind Pedagogy ( MUSC 6831/7370); (4) teach assigned music technology and/or music theory courses which may include Introduction to Music Technology ( MUSC 1340), Advanced Music Technology ( MUSC 3250), Theory Rudiments ( MUSC 1100), Theory I ( MUSC 1110), Theory II ( MUSC 1120), and or Theory III ( MUSC 2110); (5) serve on committees, including doctoral supervisory committees; (6) perform other appropriate School, College, University, and professional service. The candidate appointed to this position will report to the Director of the School of Music.
QUALIFICATIONS : (1) A master’s degree is required; a doctorate is preferred; (2) demonstrated evidence of successful applied teaching at the university level; (3) an artist-level and experienced performer who has a proven track record of excellence as a performing artist and educator at the regional, national, and international level; (4) ability to teach applied saxophone, advanced saxophone literature/pedagogy, woodwind methods class, and music technology and/or music theory courses. This position will carry a higher teaching load than research or service commitments, so candidates must show a sincere passion for teaching classes, lessons, and leading ensembles; (5) communication skills necessary to work well with faculty, student body, and local community; (6) willingness to work in close partnership with the Woodwind Area Head to make sure all the needs of the woodwind area are met; (7) all saxophonists are invited to apply, but candidates with a background in music technology and/or music theory are especially encouraged to apply. The strongest candidates will have experience teaching college level music technology and/or music theory courses; and (8) commitment to developing a long-term relationship with university and local professional teachers, band directors, students, and arts education organizations to enhance the recruitment of students into the woodwind area. Experience in community-engaged teaching, or involvement in music education activities will be highly valued in the successful candidate. The strongest candidates will recognize that music has a strong potential for social change and community engagement and their work will reflect this.
