About the Job
Elon University is seeking a dynamic and qualified individual for an 11-month, full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 2025. The successful candidate will serve as Assistant Director of Bands, working closely with the Director of Bands to enhance and oversee all aspects of the Elon Band Program and will also serve as coordinator of Elon’s percussion area. This role requires a forward-thinking musician and dedicated educator with a comprehensive approach to instrumental music who possesses a Ph.D. or DMA in Wind Conducting, Music Education, Percussion Performance, or a related field. ABD candidates will also be considered, but a terminal degree must be completed before starting in this position.
Primary responsibilities include assisting the Director of Bands in the coordination and administration of the Elon Band Program, directing ensembles, and coordinating the percussion area. Additional duties will be assigned based on the candidate’s qualifications and may include general music, percussion methods, percussion ensemble, applied lessons in percussion and/or drum set, and teaching in the Elon Core Curriculum. The successful candidate will engage in student recruitment, foster a positive and inclusive environment, and promote the value of ensemble performance to students pursuing diverse career paths.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated record of excellence teaching at the undergraduate and/or secondary level.
- Significant experience directing ensembles including concert bands, athletic bands, and percussion ensembles.
- Successful track-record of recruiting and retaining students.
- Experience arranging for marching band, planning and executing band festivals and contests, managing percussion inventory, and overseeing budgetary aspects.
- Experience teaching applied lessons in percussion.
- Commitment to fostering inclusivity and working with a diverse range of students and colleagues.
