Assistant Teaching Professor and Laboratory Coordinator, Chemistry - Emory Healthcare/Emory University
Oxford, GA
About the Job
Oxford College, a unique two-year liberal arts college within Emory University, invites applications for a Laboratory Coordinator and Assistant Teaching Professor to begin in August 2025. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the educational and intellectual vibrancy and diversity of the academic community through their teaching and service. The primary responsibilities of this position include managing and teaching second-year laboratory courses (organic reactivity and macromolecules) and rotating the teaching of a lecture course focused on macromolecules and a first-year seminar course on a topic of their choice. Management of the teaching laboratories includes the physical preparation of multiple sections, administration of the LMS, equipment and instrument maintenance, ordering, supervision of undergraduate student workers, and compliance with environmental health and safety. Prospective candidates will have a commitment to excellence in teaching and a strong interest in laboratory course development. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate in current and future scholarship of teaching and learning projects with Chemistry colleagues. As an example, we recently published our work on cultivating a meaningful application of intermolecular forces in the first-year chemistry lab through backward course design. Emory University’s unique chemistry curriculum, Chemistry Unbound, was implemented in 2017 with funding from HHMI. This curriculum emphasizes core ideas and scientific practices rather than content and historical course boundaries in order to convey the excitement, relevance, and interdisciplinary nature of 21st century chemistry to undergraduate students. The Oxford Science Building, which opened in 2016, is designed to promote student–faculty collaboration, scholarship, and innovative teaching in STEM. The Oxford Center for Teaching and Scholarship supports faculty with mentoring in teaching and professional development.
