The Scherer Lab at Emory University (Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases) aims to understand immune mechanisms that underlie durable and protective B cell responses in order to more reliably design infectious disease vaccines that provide life-long immunity. We work with both human subjects and animal models to explore immunologic mechanisms involved in B cell memory formation. We are currently seeking a highly motivated, organized, and productive scientist to fill an Associate Academic Research Scientist position in our lab. This position will perform research related to human papillomavirus and MPOX vaccine immunology projects. This position will provide an opportunity to mentor junior lab members and will require work with human specimens, pseudoviruses (risk group 2), mice, and cell lines. Research experience involving immunology-related projects, flow cytometry, and cell culture is a preferred qualification. Successful applicants will have a peer-reviewed publication record, strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with others. The PI has an established track record of translational research in the field of viral and vaccine immunology. The Scherer Lab is seated in Division of Infectious Diseases and Hope Clinic which provide outstanding and stimulating scientific environments with multiple supportive core facilities and shared resources. The Associate Academic Research Scientist performs a wide range of highly technical and complex research duties and has documented scientific achievements and increasing technical, management, leadership, and professional expertise necessary to advance basic and/or translational research programs. The targeted start date for this position is December 1, 2024. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: + Demonstrated knowledge of research and experimental platforms for analyzing, design and interpreting results Investigates and recommends potential alternative approaches to improve the quality of results of basic and/or translational research. + Demonstrates increased responsibility through management of teams and leadership of scientific projects by applying advanced knowledge, skills, and input necessary for protocol development, as well as facilitating in some training aspects of other team members. + Aids in writing IACUC, IRB, Biosafety and other approval documents. + Oversees quality assurance of research conducted by other team members. + May assist in grant and other funding applications as necessary and appropriate, or with approval of the responsible faculty director, may have their own research projects and/or have full responsibilities for specific areas of instrumentation or methodology development and user support. + With the approval of the responsible faculty director, may be principal investigators on funded proposals. + Performs other responsibilities as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: + PhD and one year of professional level experience in a technical or research lab preferred. + Or master's degree and three years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab. + Or bachelor's degree and five years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab. + Laboratory experience should be based on area of assignment. + Internship experience or experience prior to attaining the qualifying degree is not considered eligible work experience for this job classification.
