SWCA is seeking as Associate Project Restoration Ecologist for SWCA’s Great Lakes operations to contribute to the growth of our ecological restoration practice.
This is a regular, half-time (20-25 hours/week), hourly position, with potential to move to a part-time (26-24 hours/week) role reporting to our Senior Restoration Engineer. The position offers the flexibility to work from a home office, or our New Buffalo, MI office with travel to projects throughout Michigan.

What you will accomplish:- Work in a team setting and/or with contractors to implement restoration plans in an assortment areas including lake, stream and wetland restorations, dam removals, soil/bank stabilization restoration plantings.
- Work in a team setting to provide data collection, assess existing ecological conditions, perform conceptual restoration design, and complete agency permit applications.
- Effectively communicate with other project team members, clients, and contractors.
- Implement and complete tasks and responsibilities delegated by a lead/project manager, while also completing work independently and overseeing restoration contractors and/or internal restoration crews.
- Take positive action and accountability for assigned work.
- Take accountability to pursue work not assigned and help advance projects.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in an environment-related discipline, such as: environmental studies, environmental science, biology, ecology, or equivalent professional experience.
- Five (5) years of professional experience supporting ecological restoration projects
- The position requires the ability to travel up to 50% of the time, primarily to project sites within Indiana and the surrounding states.
- Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office products.
- Previous experience in technical writing within a professional context.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience leading teams in ecological restoration or similar work (landscaping, wetland construction, manual invasive plant management, etc.).

An employee in this New Buffalo, MI-based position can expect an hourly rate of $30.71/hr. - $39.64/hr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
