JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Attendance Officer
REPORTS TO: Building Principals, School Social Workers, and Assistant Superintendent
The attendance officer is responsible for providing services to assigned schools in the investigation and counseling of students with excessive attendance problems. Position enforces the provisions of the Code of Virginia attendance laws; assesses strengths and needs of students and families; interprets attendance policies; works as a team member to develop prevention/intervention strategies; provides case management; monitors student progress; and, makes referrals to link students and families to community resources.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in counseling, criminal justice, social work, psychology, education, or a related field with some related experience providing services for school-aged children and their families; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Must possess a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of attendance laws/regulations, intervention/prevention strategies, and referral sources.
- Must possess excellent assessment, case management, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Must possess the ability to interpret/communicate school attendance laws and provide support activities for students and their families.
- Must be able to work with minimal daily supervision.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and outside agencies.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interprets the Code of Virginia, court rulings, and the Students and Parent Handbook relating to student attendance issues.
- Gathers and reviews attendance data to identify excessively absent students (excused and unexcused absences).
- Assesses students with attendance problems and makes home visits to assess the family environment.
- Collaborates with school staff to develop interventions for students who are truant and develops individualized service plans to improve attendance.
- Monitors areas in the community where non-attending students are reported to congregate during school hours and takes appropriate action by executing enforcement steps.
- Provides families with information related to the needs of their child and acts as a resource to parents/guardians by providing family support activities and communicating the importance of school attendance.
- Acts as a resource to administrators, school counselors, teachers, and health services personnel at assigned schools regarding attendance programs, interpretation of attendance policies/laws, and record-keeping requirements.
- Assists with implementing truancy prevention programs for assigned schools and recommends strategies to support and improve regular school attendance (i.e.: incentives, peer groups, recognitions).
- Maintains necessary records ensuring confidentiality of students and their families and prepares related reports.
- Travels throughout the community and school sites in the performance of duties.
- Models non discriminatory practices in all activities.

The duties of this position typically require frequent walking, standing, and stooping; lifting to 25 pounds may be required. Working conditions include indoor and outdoor environments. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas utilizing the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word level; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Regular contact with staff members, administrators, vendors, contractors, and government officials is required.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Part-time (up to 20 hours per week)
The position is not eligible for division insurance and benefits.
EVALUATION:
Job performance will be evaluated by the home school principal following school board policy.
SALARY RANGE:
$40/hr
