Job Summary
$94,176 - $148,532 / year + Full-Time County Benefits
Represent the Commonwealth in General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts on all felony offenses, as well as all criminal offenses categorized as Class 1 or Class 2 misdemeanors, that take place in the City of Williamsburg or James City County.
Responsibilities
• Provide guidance to law enforcement officers investigating criminal activity
• Participate in Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office sponsored trainings for law enforcement by instructing officers in specified areas of criminal law and the rules of evidence
• Participate in coordinated efforts with law enforcement, social services, and other appropriate community organizations, to maximize community awareness, safety, protection, and response to crime
• Respond to citizen inquiries and requests for information regarding Virginia’s Criminal Code and the criminal justice system
• Enter and maintain accurate case data information, utilizing the office’s case management system
• Maintain and prosecute an assigned case load of misdemeanors and felonies
• Conduct research and draft briefs and memorandum as necessary to successfully prosecute assigned cases
• Organize and facilitate community outreach events and presentations
• Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a law degree from an accredited law school; must be a member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar
• Knowledge of law as applied to Virginia criminal law and familiarity with courtroom procedures
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to deal effectively with law enforcement, victims of crime, defense attorneys, and the general public
• Speak effectively in court and before groups
• Express legal opinions effectively in writing
• Prior experience prosecuting major felonies in Virginia Courts
Attorney I
• No additional requirements.
Attorney II
• Previous courtroom experience prosecuting criminal cases.
• Supervisory experience involving process and/or personnel.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple caseloads simultaneously, special projects and an elevated level of case types.
