What You'll Do:
As the Automation Engineering Director, you will oversee Electrical Engineering, Robotic Automation, and Mechanical Engineering teams and manage contract resources to meet corporate control standards, technology initiatives, employee development and overall goals of the department.
Your Accountabilities in the Role:
- Manages and oversees resource planning, KPI's (Key Performance Indicators), corporate technology initiatives, department goals, and project budgets ensuring company goals are met.
- Mentors and guides the team from concept to final machine acceptance and oversees all management duties, including mentoring mechanical engineers, creating development plans, conducting one-on-one meetings, managing disciplinary actions, and conducting performance reviews to ensure overall employee development and retention.
- Manages project execution performance metrics across all engineering functions; including schedule, budget, scope, risk, and customer satisfaction to ensure department goals are met.
- Manages the electrical, robotic, mechanical engineering managers, mechanical leads, and technical writers to ensure project goals are met.
- Provides leadership and guidance for both internal and external concepts and final design reviews ensuring overall customer satisfaction.
- Oversees Machine Safety Risk Assessments with a cross functional team, collaborates with Controls Engineers to develop a Sequence of Events and Timing chart, and conducts DFMEA/PFMEA. Supports the projects through manufacturing assembly and runoff while overseeing, updating and finalizing documentation for customer submission.
- Provides technical support to other departments, identifies and prioritizes automation improvements, contributes to the operations roadmap to meet goals, and participates in regular meetings to address issues and training needs.
- Travels to customer sites to support sales/applications as an Automation Division leadership team representative and to suppliers/tradeshows for technology initiatives.
Position Requirements:
- Education: Bachelors Degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience: 10+ years of progressive custom automation design experience in a manufacturing environment. 5+ years of project team leadership and supervisory/management roles. Mechanical automation design, electrical hardware design, PLC and HMI programming, and robot programming for custom automation and robotic systems experience is needed. Experience being accountable tor project execution metrics needed.
- Certifications: N/a
- Functional Skills: Excellent planning, prioritizing, and organizational skills. Detail-oriented and thorough. Requires solid math, analytical, and problem-solving skills to effectively enhance the manufacturing areas. Strong ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and due dates. Solid understanding of equipment quality and construction; understanding of how each machine compares to others in the market; Resource planning, cost-benefit analysis and mechanical design analysis skills are needed; hands-on engineering skills with. Ability to manage corporate and technology initiatives, department goals, KPI's and project budgets.
- Technology Skills: Advanced PC skills is required as well as Microsoft Office skills. Knowledge of mechanical design requirements and best practices for designing complex robotic custom automation solutions as well as expertise in PLC and HMI programming, electrical schematic design, robot programming, safety circuits, vision systems, lasers, conveyor and assembly systems, fluid power, and robot systems integration
- Communication Skills:Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present information.
- Leadership/ Behaviors: Excellent collaboration and teamwork skills; ability to listen to ideas and implement the best enhancements. Ability to be positive, conceptualize, and initiate projects effectively. Versatility/flexibility is also key to perform various portions of multiple projects. Ability to mentor and train others.

Other Important Information:
Pay/Salary: Salary is commensurate with proven expertise. Potential for annual profitability bonus.

Reports To: VP/GM - Automation Division
Core Hours: 8 am - 5 pm (schedule can be flexible; will work approx. 8 hours within this timeframe)
Typical Work Week: M-F; some weekends [& OT] required (when applicable); 40 - 45 hours a week on average
Direct Reports: 3-4 Engineering Managers
Travel: Approximately 10% to customer sites, suppliers and tradeshows.
