POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Automotive Diesel Mechanic
F.L.S.A. Non-Exempt
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Properly licensed to operate vehicles.
- Demonstrates aptitude and competence for automotive, tractor, turf equipment repair, welding and mechanical problem-solving.
- Must have excellent communication skills, be team oriented; neat in appearance, dependable, and punctual; helpful and pleasant in dealing with people.
- Must have the ability to lift a minimum of 60 pounds repeatedly and to turn, twist, and bend as required to operate equipment and perform duties.
REPORT TO: Transportation Supervisor
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Board of Education. Benefits according to the Classified Agreement.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Operates all District equipment in a safe manner.
Supervises the diagnosing, assigning, and repair of a wide range of District equipment: trucks, trailers, snow removal apparatus and tools, turf machinery, and miscellaneous school property.
Establishes an efficient, effective system of routine and preventative maintenance on all equipment.
Sets up and supervises a system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies, keeping records and inventories.
Maintains safe and clean work environment, including acceptable storage methods for combustibles.
Determines vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts.
Keeps equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules; installing component and part upgrades; controlling corrosion; completing winterization procedures.
Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
Verifies vehicle performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems.
Complies with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
Maintains vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting.
Maintains vehicle records by annotating services and repairs.
Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
Contains costs by using warranty; evaluating service and parts options.
Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
Additional Responsibilities:
Work overtime as required by supervisor or district administration.
Attends meetings as requested by supervisors or district administration.
Respectful and courteous to parents, students and staff.
Functions as a team player and works on other duties as assigned.
Dress and grooming should be appropriate, with proper uniform and name badge.
