Automotive Mechanic
Description
Automotive Mechanics are characterized by their ability to analyze and diagnose the cause of breakdowns and faulty mechanical performance and then perform major mechanical, hydraulic and electrical repairs on the following, but not limited to: engines (gas and diesel), clutches, torque converters, drive lines, chassis, brakes, steering and accessories. The vehicles and equipment can include, but are not limited to: ten wheel dump trucks, pickups, automobiles, school buses, and heavy construction equipment. This work may be performed in the field as well as the garage. An Automotive Mechanic does related work as assigned.
Examples of Duties
Analyzes and diagnoses problems using operators' information, reports, observations, test equipment, technical manuals and bulletins;
Maintains gasoline and diesel engines, replacing or repairing such parts as valves, bearings, gears, shafts, pistons, rings, pumps (oil, fuel and water), radiators, carburetors, etc.;
Performs complete engine overhauls and installs new engines;
Repairs, maintains and adjusts automotive electrical systems and chassis elements.
Repairs and maintains snow and ice control equipment; vehicles and equipment in the field;
Makes welding repairs and fabricates some new pieces;
Works as a motor equipment operator when directed;
Road tests vehicles;
Installs glass in vehicles;
Cleans equipment and work area;
Keeps records regarding work performed;
May supervise staff in the absence of the supervisor; and
Performs other related activities as assigned.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough working knowledge of the practices, techniques and terminology of the trade; good manual dexterity; demonstrated ability to analyze, diagnose and repair difficult mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems on heavy automotive and other equipment; ability to read and understand technical maintenance manuals, circuit diagrams and blueprints; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to weld and braze; ability to keep accurate, clear, legible records; ability to lift 50 pounds; physical condition commensurate with demands of the position.
Typical Qualifications
Applicants must meet all requirements for one of the following qualification options in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment:
General experience
Three years of full-time, paid experience in automotive or diesel mechanics.
Completion of a program of technical study in automotive or diesel mechanics.
License/ Certification
Possession of a valid NYS drivers license.
Other requirements
Part-time service will be given prorated credit toward experience requirements.
Automotive Mechanic, NC in all divisions
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Must possess or obtain within one year of appointment a class B[1] commercial motor vehicle drivers license.
Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
Appropriate licensure must be maintained throughout employment.
A driving record evidencing safe and responsible vehicle operation is required.
Must authorize and execute any necessary releases to enable the appointing authority to verify licensure and driving history involving violations and/or crimes.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENTS TO LIVINGSTON COUNTY HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT:
Must possess an endorsement for tank or obtain within 60 calendar days of obtaining a Class B or above commercial motor vehicle drivers license.
Must possess certification as a NYS Motor Vehicle Inspector, Group 1 and Group 2 within 12 months of appointment.
[1] A class A commercial motor vehicle drivers license may be substituted for a class B commercial motor vehicle drivers license.
